Let's bring this thread back shall we? How about Alonso's magnificent performance today? He showed why he's the numero uno at the scuderia. I hope race pace is better than qualifying pace. I'd love to see him fight for the bottom step of the podium tomorrow.

He'll no doubt be picking the maximum amount of points it's possible for him to take home.

Massa could also conveniently crash at a very opportune time for the scuderia's pit strategy... it's happened before leading to an unexpected win.

Alonso has the HUGE advantage.....of not having Maldonado or Grosjean near him.

Oh Oh Oh! Can I take a stab at why this thread isn't commented on enough? I think it's because unlike the Daddy of all "That's" threads, people don't go out of their way to badmouth or leave incendiary comments here (the flip side is there's no one also leaving outlandish bombastic claims here) so what you've got is folks coming in to say good job Alonso, and so there isn't much attack and counter attack posts being left.

How was that?

1. The obvious needs no discussion
2. Attacks is relative to what you perceive.

Basically, anything other than what people like you think, to you, its an attack. Which to many others... Its nothing worth going back and forth with.

I read this in the Merriam-Webster book of words.
1 : a person who puts on a false appearance of virtue or religion
2: a person who acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or feelings

Ok, you've confused me. Hehehe

But most importantly.... Should Massa sit out? I mean what if HE hits the wall?? Would it be too suspicious if he crashes, alonso wins and his contract gets renewed??

Oh no. I dont wanna watch!

Top 5 finish in each of the remaining races and the championship is his (I think).

Er, no. Even 2nd in all remaining races wouldn't guarantee Fernando the title, as Lewis, Kimi, Webber and Vettel could all win the remaining 7 races.

Well write to the BBC and tell them they crunched their numbers wrong.

Not for the first time the BBC makes a mistake, they said that everyone who's one the Singapore GP won the title that same season...

08 Alonso WIN Hamilton WDC
09 Hamilton WIN Button WDC
10 Alonso WIN Vettel WDC
11 Vettel WIN Vettel WDC

Alonso looks to be in damage limitation mode, knowing that he doesn't have the fastest car, or even the second fastest car, and riding his luck and seemingly bulletproof reliability. He picked up two places from his grid spot but only because two of the cars above him retired. This might work if those creeping up on him keep having problems but Ferrari need to get their updates working soon to feel more comfortable.

At this point in 2010, the points lead Alonso had was even bigger than it is today.

Now that's unexpected, but I think the Ferrari has a better shot, the car still seems to have a good development plan for it, they just didn't work out for this race. Was reasonably fast in the middle of the race, might do better on the tracks coming up as they are quite different to Singapore.

Alonso drove cautiously today, his battles with Maldonaldo and Di Rista showed this, he doesn't go for the move at the fist opportunity, waits to see if a better one comes up.

Alonso needs race wins. Without at least one more win, his lead is nothing. I'd say he needs at least one an keep counting on others' issues; or claim two wins and take matters into his own hands.

BUT without positive upgrades from Ferrari, Mclaren and Red Bull will be tough to beat.

As long as the other teams/drivers have failures, crashes and whatnot; Alonso could win this title without another win but it is a dangerous game to play, one retirement from Alonso and suddenly his lead could be cut to just four points or less. I wouldn't be surprised to see Alonso win at least one other race, the Ferrari isn't the fastest but isn't the slowest either.

Yup that's a dangerous game to play. Against Vettel, definitely. He can calmly go on, collect the pts when he needs them and grab the win when the car's the best.

Lewis and Mclaren are much more fragile, but the car is the best. With the pace they had in Hungary, Spa... No reason to think anyone can beat them in Suzuka. BUT they have to play it cool, which is going to be tough considering Lewis will want to bounce back from the dnf.
