I even heard someone say somewhere that Whitmarsh thinks very highly of Tim Goss, and that Merc picked the wrong man :rofl::rofl:

Well he probably thinks they picked the wrong driver too. Each to his own.

I don't really see how they can stop him picking up a phone and talking, they surely won't be monitoring all his calls cos that's not legal.
Simplified example.
MERCEDES DESIGN TEAM - Paddy , we're thinking of trying this, just want to run It past you.
PADDY- you're on the right lines but we tried that, it's not quite right because such and such will happen, you need to try this.
MERCEDES DESIGN TEAM- Thanks paddy chat again soon

 there, easy. And he could then go out and tend his roses.

Remember spygate? I'm sure you do, you're hinting towards a similar path. But hey if all he needs to do is talk over the phone to be useful why bother ever going in to work. I mean seeing the data first hand working with the cad designs, comp sims, wind tunnel models are all irrelevant when all you need to be doing is some "gardening"

On the surface of it losing Sanchez to Ferrari and Hamilton and Lowe to Mercedes in less than a year would be significant losses, however it also represents big opportunities for some young hungry up-and-coming talent at McLaren to show what they can do.

Remember Rory and Adrian were once new faces with fresh ideas waiting for an opportunity to strut their stuff :)

"Simplified example " Bud. Use your imagination. Nothing like spy gate. More like when Newey left Wiliams.

What ever you want to believe that helps you think Lewis will have a winning car I suppose. Knowing first hand how frustrating working with other non in house designers is with graphics, I can only imagine how hard engineering wise would be.

Nothing to do with whether I think it will give Lewis a faster car. No idea how the team will gel together, no idea whether Lowe will come up with better things than Mercedes are already working on. That wasn't the point I was making. The point I was making was that Lowe won't be idle whilst on gardening leave, it isn't how things work. Newey designed a new wing
For McLaren whilst on gardening leave from Williams.

Whilst still employed by McLaren he won't be allowed to work on the 2014 Merc, simple as that! Why would McLaren pay him a salary to do work for the competition? For sure he can come up with ideas for Merc to use once hes there but without knowing the current designs for the 2014 car his ideas won't be useful.

Well they'll tell him the ideas for the 2014 cars. Mclaren can't control who he speaks to in his free time.

And I think what everyone else is saying is - McLaren cant police it. There is no way they could stop him from sitting at home (as Im sure he as a home office) and communicating with Mercedes, seeing figures, seeing designs etc. Of course IF he was caught, and McLaren found out he was doing it - well that would be a different story....

I know it happens all the time in my industry. I did it when I was on gardening leave for 6 weeks in August. I sat at home and did 3 weeks work for my new company, whilst being paid by my old company....

I can not imagine lowe having a 600 page document on how mclaren runs in his sky rocket

True policing it is hard, it depends on the honour of Paddy i suppose.
But all im trying to say is, absent engineering with a team from home is not as easy as it looks. Picking up a phone or getting a cad drawing emailed to look at aren't exactly very productive ways to work on engineering an F1 car.

Any influence would be minimal, his presence would be felt come 2015, assuming he is even involved with the design team and not in management as is being reported.

It's never good indicator to see talent leaving a team. Something is causing it.

The 2014 car is reported to have a herbatious border! :hehe:

Marussia is the only Cosworth engine left of the grid, and I saw in Renault's announcement that they said they were capping the number of teams they'd supply at five. So I'm thinking that they'll head the Renault route for 2014 as their most likely supplier.
