To be honest, I haven't tried it on full. I found the medium setting to be manageable enough to not feel the need to go any higher, but I might try it out. Who knows, it might save me some pain :P

I have the racing line on for corners, too, if I don't have something to focus on I eventually forget and just end up going off-track or something :(

I bought both the PS3 and 360 game on launch day but been playing mainly the PS3 version as it's hooked up to my bigger TV. I spent my entire first day with the game just doing time trials at various circuits trying out different settings (only using the control pad). I eventually settled on pretty much the highest downforce and lowest top speed settings, with the TC on medium and no braking assist. Importantly, I'm not using the analogue stick to steer, instead I've set the pad to the same controls as I used to use on F1 '06 for the PS2, which I played pretty much into oblivion!! Continued to do time trials in this setting for a couple of days then moved on to a variety of single races in the Lotus (starting from near the back) best result I managed was 8th after starting from 20th.

Last 2 days I've finally started the championship in a Lotus after all this practice and have completed 3 races

Race 1 - 8th on grid to win in Dry race
Race 2 - Pole to 4th in wet race
Race 3 - 6th on grid (pole but given 5 place grid penalty for BEING BLOCKED on my fast lap by Massa!!) to win in wet race

I don't understand why the game appears to be this easy in a Lotus on the settings I'm using because whilst not the hardest settings, they're also nowhere near the easiest...

Can anyone recommend a wheel to get for either the PS3 or 360 that will be a good balance between being good but also not too costly?

Are you doing full-length races? Apparently, over on the Codemasters forums, people are saying that shorter-scaled races make it easier for you.

Is this game manageable with just the hand controller?

Yeah, but you may well find yourself requiring the TC aid in order to feel comfortable with it.

Hexagram, I tried TC on full earlier and there's such a big difference between the two. I'm not sure I'll stick with it, but it certainly makes me feel more confident in the slower corners.

I've been doing 20% races. I must try this out and see what the lap time differences are. It is a bit too easy alright.

What's your XBL tag? We should race!

As far as TC goes, I'm looking into getting the 360 racing wheel. Hopefully then I will drop TC all together since the pedals will give a lot more control.

As far as using the corner racing line, I have dropped it in some race tracks lately. You really need to learn the track inside out though and try use visual cues as your braking point.

Good fun.

I have a logitech Driving Force GT (DFGT) for the PS3 that I got for when GT5 eventually comes out(I think there's drivers for it to be used on the PC too) and I think it's really good and works brilliantly with F1 2010, Game have it for £80. The flappy paddles are more just like big switches but fine to use and there's a sequential stick on the right :/ not H and no clutch pedal (not a problem on F1).
I've not used any other wheels so can't give any comparison but I'm more than happy with this.

Yep, when I've been using the controller I've had to use some TC but I can turn it off when using the wheel although still the occasional spin when giving it too much coming out the corners, particularly on cold tyres.

Would the statement that the shorter races are easier for you because the computer competitors are running it like it is full race distance (i.e. nursing tires and fuel) and the player is balls to the wall? In a full race distance race, the player would need to pit more times to keep that sorta action up.

i was under the assumption that tyre's scaled with race distance around Silverstone unless my eye's diseve me the other day the primes were lasting 15/ 21 or so laps according to the on screen thing in the pit.

i wouldn't say its easier but from a game perspective going 60 laps around most places just isn't going to be as interesting as progressing onto the next track.

Huge difference between short race weekend times and full.

For example:

At Hockenheim best lap time from AI was 1:21.400 (short weekend) but on a long weekend best laptime was 1.18.300! These are quali times.

And then the fuel loads don't scale for short race distances. So if you do a 20% race then you only really carry fuel for 10-11 laps. But on 100% race distance the car is so much more difficult to deal with in the corners.

Also it depends on the difficulty that you modify.

So take easy mode and customize it, expect the AI to go easy on you. Take expert and customize it and the AI will still try hammer you.

So i got to drive this tonight. Same old story, the cars drive nicely and the graphics are good, but the AI and all the little (ie, the truly important) things are immensely poor.

Like?

To be honest, it's the best I've played since GP4.

The crash physics and effects (i had a car land on top of me and i drove off without any problems), the pit stop situation (the other cars were ghosts, wtf?) and most of all the RIDICULOUS things you get penalised for would be some examples.

Like i say though, the cars are enjoyable to drive and it's very satisfying when you overtake. FWIW i was using a steering wheel.

Crash Physics? I agree.
The Physics in general? Awesome. Specially if you shift down gears too quickly into corners. It's perfect.

Ya the pitstop situation is being worked on in a patch I believe.

The penalties are a bit excessive specially in qualifying.

That all being said, hardly anything like previous games we have endured from the likes of Sony and EA.

Well, since I'm off until the 19th, I guess I might actually make it through the rest of my first season quite quickly. Going to move on to full-length races after this season, having dropped down to 40% after Bahrain. Fortunately, my controller-holding position does not stretch my shoulder/neck, so I can play for hours with no pain :D
