Not sure if this was discussed. Bernie wants driver to go for it. Well don't restrict them. An engine has to last 2 races and a gear box 4 (i believe next season) of course a driver is going to conserve his equipment with rules as they are.
Bernie wants to see them race well let the drivers have a fresh engine for every race this way no one has to conserve their equpment and coast to the end. He want it more competitive, don't keep changing the rules. Because the rich team can adjust quicker than the poor ones. Keep the things the same for a long time and the poor team will get there.

thats exactly the way i feel too, and have mentioned before that they should have reviews of race rules and regs a minimum of every two years. i understand f1 should remain update with the progress of development, but it just seems we are getting major changes every year, which in turn puts extra costs on the constructors in terms of re-development.
the whole story is a farce.

I think there should be more difference between first and second, like there used to be, but mainly, if Bernie wants guys to overtake he should get properly trained, impartial, permenant stewards and tell them to stop dicking around with race results. Also he should remove all the contradictory. unclear and just plain stupid rules which punish a driver for trying to get past the car in front. This is motor racing.

I can not understand the logic behind the medal system at all. Didn't BE want the change of points from the top 6 to the top 8 because people further down the field had nothing to fight for? no he has gone the other way and said only the top 3 gets points/medals :-s

What a complete pile of doggy doo doo.

Especially as they think that next year the field spread will be a lot bigger than this year. Hardly an incentive for someone who is driving a car that is 2 seconds a lap of the pace to be bothered to get into the car.

How about a binary point system

1st 128
2nd 64
3rd 32
4th 16
5th 8
6th 4
7th 2
8th 1

HAHHAH binary.
Hexidecimal.

I respect this solution is much much better that the crappy medal system, it would make the history books a complete joke.
Because we'd have drivers who are competing now, absolutly dicking on the historically brilliant drivers.
It's better than medals, but a bit excessive. Interesting though.

How about this?
1st 1pt
2nd 2pts
3rd 3pts
.
.
.
20th 20pts

Pole position and fastest lap get -1pt. The driver with the fewest points wins the title. That way EVerrry team gets points

Maybe some good news, it looks like the medals idea might not be approved by the FIA afterall.

Bernie Ecclestone's plan to install an Olympics-style 'medals' scoring system for formula one in 2009 may not be approved, British newspapers report.

After former team owner Eddie Jordan slammed the idea as 'nonsense', the London newspaper The Times said it "is likely to be rejected by the FIA."

F1 CEO Ecclestone insists that the teams fully support the proposal, but it must first be approved by the FIA at a forthcoming meeting of the World Motor Sport Council.

The Times said the FIA 'is not expected' to support the scheme, and even if a green light is shown, 'it would not be implemented' until 2010.

An unnamed 'team insider', meanwhile, told The Guardian that the concept "has certainly not been agreed by all the teams."

The Daily Telegraph said Ecclestone's proposal "may not even be formally on the agenda" for the FIA meeting.

That all sounds plausible. There is no chance in hell all teams are in support of this.

If the FIA reject the medal scheme, I wonder if it could also open up yet another chapter in the "Max vs Bernie power struggle" that has become apparent over the past year?
