FIA appoints barrister over 'Nazi' claims

By Jonathan Noble Monday, May 5th 2008, 11:17 GMT

The FIA has appointed leading barrister Anthony Scrivener QC to undertake a detailed analysis of the sexual allegations surrounding Max Mosley to judge whether suggestions of a Nazi-element to his activities are true.

The News of the World newspaper reported that Mosley was involved in a 'Nazi-style' orgy with prostitutes, sparking the controversy that has cast doubts on his future as FIA president.

Mosley has strongly denied that there was any Nazi element to his sexual conduct, however, and the FIA will now complete a full investigation to judge the matter for itself prior to the General Assembly meeting on June 3 that will decide the president's future.

In a statement issued by the FIA on Monday, the governing body said: "Senior officers of the FIA have appointed Anthony Scrivener QC as an independent expert to undertake a full analysis of the available evidence relating to allegations in the News of the World that Mr. Mosley was involved in 'Nazi style' activities. Mr Mosley has welcomed this appointment.

"Mr Scrivener QC will provide an opinion on whether the available evidence supports the use by the News of the World of this description. Should the FIA Extraordinary General Assembly so decide, this opinion will be available to the member clubs of the FIA on 3 June."

Scrivener is a leading member of the bar of England and Wales, as has served as a judge on the FIA International Court of Appeal since 2006.

I was about to say the barrister was probably one of Mosley's university mates, but not only is he probably well known to Mosley, he's served on the FIA before! Have these guys ever heard of getting in a fully disinterested, unbiased party to examine something?! Moreover, do they seriously need a barrister to ascertain whether or not Mosley's orgy was Nazi themed. It's as clear as day on the tape!

how can someone appointed by the FIA be called independent?

Dead right Bud, also, is he now appointed by (i.e. paid for by) the FIA to sort out MMs personal self induced problems? Thats a disgrace if it is. Just imagine an MD of a company employing, at the companies expense, a fancy lawyer to defend his 'private' actions.
I find it a bit irrelevant now anyway, MMs reputation is shot to bits with many of the people with whom he has to do business so how can he be effective?
If the vote of 'no confidence' is carried will MM pay these costs I wonder?

Both true. I never thought of the financial aspect of it in that Mosley is using FIA funds to help solve his own problems. The scary thing is, I'm not even shocked by this development. If it were any other company, I'd be appalled, but the FIA aren't any other company.

I read that the extraordinary meeting will cost millions in terms of transporting all the members plus the accommodation.

This Mosley thing is becoming another bullsht scandal. I am kind of getting sick of it. First there was the Serie A football scandal, then the Spygate F1 scandal last year and now this Mosley scandal. I just want to watch car racing and see my team win. That is it. If you want to get rid of Mosley hurry up and do it and put Todt or someone "appropriate" in his place and move on.

Well that could be interesting, I dont see why not, except that he is a Prime Minister so how would he have the time to be FIA President as well? He is very low in the polls in France, so maybe he is expecting a quick exit from his current job, and lining up a new one?
Still, at least he can bring his own Pit Babe! :D

Whoever replaces Mosley must be a Ferrari favouring person otherwise whoever your thinking wont be President of no FIA. If the French Prime Minister sees it that Ferrari is of prime concern when it comes to F1 then he would be a great candidate. If not, then like I said earlier Jean Todt is more than appropriate for the job. Otherwise just keep Max Mosley, he hasn't done anything wrong anyway sport/job wise. ;-)
