So, it looks like it's clearly a bit of "Red BullS#!t"

A bit of a kerfuffle over tyre testing

There is a storm in a teacup in Monaco this morning over a tyre test that took place in Barcelona after the Spanish GP, involving Mercedes. The team ran both Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton and 1,000km were run as Pirelli tired to do some development work. The team was not aware of what tyres were being used. I understand that Mercedes checked with the FIA before agreeing to the test, and was given the go-ahead as Pirelli’s deal allows for testing but the tyre company does not currently have a suitable chassis and so is allowed to ask teams to help. There will be other tests as well with other teams as the season progresses, but it seems that Red Bull is making a fuss because it was not doing the testing…

It is very clear that Pirelli needs to do development work both for 2013 and 2014 tyres but it does not have a car to use that is sufficiently up-to-date to be useful. The only answer therefore is to use the teams because they cannot ever agree to allow Pirelli to use one chassis or another.

Thus it seems there is less of a story than the gabbling in the paddock suggests.

So; Did Pirelli call Mercedes randomly, or was it because they were the one's, that complained the most?
Furthermore, Did they also tested new parts? was there anyone from FIA to verify this wasn't the case? I remember Brown saying ''we've got a few things that will help us with the tyres''
If not, there is no blame on either, but if they did, it is unfair for the rest of teams.

Merc stating that it is normal for Pirelli to do testings, and other teams will do tests too, doesn't answer anything... because since tyre degradation is there to play a role in the championship, some teams have done a better job in that subject than others, Picking Mercedes at that exact point, is like helping them with their issues. This may not be the case, but it is difficult to believe it was just a coincidence.

Mercedes got the new parts in Monaco, the test was held directly after the race,so they couldn't bring any new parts to test

After Barcelona not Monaco, they could easily have tested new parts.

Mercedes said they didn't test new parts. Unless there was an FiA official there that had an intimate understanding of the car, or all parts that go on a car are bar coded, scanned and put into some type of database how would anyone know if this is true or not. It doesn't just apply to Mercedes. How does anyone know when a team tests new parts or not?

I mean seriously, we talk a lot about things that we've got no clue as to the basic function of what the process even is.

Mercedes said they didn't test new parts.

They originally said they didn't use their 2013 car too, and originally denied a test...

It was Pirelli's test not Mercedes. If Mercedes were testing parts it would negate the tyre test. Pirelli needs a constant car and one that had just done a GP was ideal. They don't want a car with new bits being tested.
I don't think the test has ever been denied has it? There were photos from a Polish site showing the cars Testing, so. Was no secret. Also there were photos showing the Ferrari when they tested the tyres.

That info I haven't run across, so couldn't comment. What were the sources?

Which bits? The testing pics? I'll try to find them they were on twitter but I think the Ferrari ones have been pulled now.

Here's the tweet. That took some finding. It shows the Merc cars being tested but the video of the Ferrari looks to have been pulled.

I read that Lauda has a 50Euro bet with Marko that Mercedes won't be penalized for the Barca tire test they did.

All I can picture is Ralph Wiggum betting with the Mad Cat Lady on who gets to eat the glue paste first.

Yes but this glue is made from prancing horses.

Ferrari didn't use the 2013 car, so that test is not in question.

I know that, about the Ferrari car. It's the supposed secretness of it when pics were on the Internet.
