As Detroit has gone bust it means only one thing... the Robocop story is getting closer to reality

I'd buy that for a dollar.

I would not of thought so, with limited fuel the teams would not want to waste any

Merc have released a simulation of the sound the new engine will make. I don't think it sounds wonderful, but it may in realty sound better than this when its the real engine. Hope so.

Yeah heard that and it saddens me...sounds like an engine coming through broken speakers. And no, my laptop speakers are fine. :hehe:

It will sound different (not necessarily better) when in the cars and out on track. The bit that I'm struggling with more than the noise is that extra gear in there.

Interesting read. First realization that the energy recovery turbine in the exhaust is optional.

I don't know, guess we could read the engine regulations. I think they're speaking specifically about a secondary turbine that's there to recover the energy from the exhaust which is the optional part. No one would see the turbo part of the 1.6 liter turbo engine as optional as that's where the power is going to come from. But they keep referring to these things as power units instead of engines and that seems like it's not too far off the mark.

Yeah, it's strangely worded. Sounds like he is saying that there is a turbine that recovers flow and charges the intake (turbo) and also harvests the excess energy (apart from what the compressor gets) via the mgu and that when you stick any type of restriction in the output exhaust the noise is reduced

Surely he means the turbo plus 'excess energy to battery' system is optional

I could be wrong but it sounds like he means you could have a naturally aspirated V6 or optionally add a turbo and the mgu harvester

If that's the case it's a serious exple of over engineering a simple explanation

I'm thinking the turbo is a give, but the energy recovery to the battery may be optional, no different to the way KERS was. But with a 160 horse power on tap, it's really only optional in wording as no car would be competitive without it both in the reduced power and the decreased fuel efficiency.

So sounds like Sherlock is saying its optional if you want to end up with half as much power per fuel unit. i.e technically its optional but due to the integrated power unit, its not really

unless you are McLaren and have a radical idea to be different to everyone else :hehe:

Restricting the exhaust with the 2nd turbine would loose a lot of power. Unless it is only routed through the 2nd turbine when boost pressure is released, or on overrun
