It's all just gossip, rumour, and scandal this time of year. There is no accountability for a lack of, or a turn of pace as everyone is "methodically working through our program".

On the whole though, one observation I've made over the years, is that generally the quickest cars during a season, aren't the ones up in lights during pre-season testing....

Anyhow, come the first race," When the flag drops, the bull%^it stops...."

Toro Rosso’s STR6 seems to have quite a bit of pace early in the season, could they sneak up and grab some podiums this season?

If I am not mistaken, the STR6 is essentially a Red Bull Chassis with a Ferrari Engine and KERS system?

It's not, it's an STR-developed evolution of the STR-developed STR5, itself STR's in-house evolution of the STR4, which was a Red Bull Engineering creation. Essentially, the Toro Rosso designs were forked from the 2009 Red Bull, with 2009 the last time Red Bull and Toro Rosso raced near-identical cars.

Interestingly, the year before, the Scuderia Toro Rosso variant of the Red Bull design was unreservedly superior to the original. Through some sort of fluke of engineering, the chassis was better suited to a Ferrari Engine than to the Renault lump in the Red Bull. That's why Vettel was so famously able to triumph in Italy that year, and STR to perform an upset by defeating the Works (or Premier) Red Bull outfit in the WCC.

Anyway, the point is that the STR6 and the RB7 are different designs, so it's possible, albeit unlikely, that the STR6 is not only in the same league, but potentially even better. On the other hand, Alguersuari and Buemi are nothing special*, so it would have to be miles better than the works machine to allow the team to trouble Vettel and Webber.

*Seriously, there is no justice in the world. Those nobodies still have drives whilst Chandhok, Davidson, Sato, Paffett, (nearly) Heidfeld and other far more talented drivers are stuck testing, racing in other categories or sitting next to David Croft.

That's a fair observation though a real exception would be pre-2009 testing, Brawn were lighting up the tracks very late into testing and everyone were screaming "CAN THEY ACTUALLY SCORE A PODIUM THIS SEASON???"

STR I would imagine them spending the year trying to beat Team Lotus

I agree, i don't think str will be much better than last year sadly. I also reckon that Lotus might be a match for them as well.

I'm not sure, I never imagined Brawn to be where they were? So don't count them out...

Actually I went and read about Ben Spies' career after you said that, it seems he was the best rookie last year and then moved to a big team like you said? I'm already rooting for him! But I'll see. The hard thing is that in Portugal motosport events are transmitted by private channels which you have to pay A LOT to assist. So I'll have to find a way of downloading BBC (?) transmissions or something, I did it some times for F1 too.

Back on topic, surely these test times are pretty, but they don't mean anything so far. Only when we get to Melbourne we'll know if STR is delivering.
