Welcome to the forums, I'm also new here and have a lot of questions about Formula 1.
I'm also from USA (Tennessee) and people here only do NASCAR.. nothing else.
but I'm one of a kind and I absolutely hate NASCAR but LOVE Formula 1.[/quoted]
I like all form's of racing yet F1 is my favorite and we Texans have been categorized as only loving NASCAR but nothing could be further from the truth.

If anyones cares to reply, how are grid starts chosen? do they do a race the day before the race and whoever has the fastest lap gets a better starting grid?

Just like any other form of racing they must qualify which is on saturday and who ever set's the fastest time is on pole position and the the slower times trickle down to who start's next, really very simple.

and also when does the next Formula 1 season start? from my understanding last season JUST ended?

This seaon start's sometime in March I believe, search the threads/topics as they will answer alost if not most of your questions.

Welcome to the forum,
tex :)

it just intrigues me that (from what I've seen so far) the teams and drivers really get a long.
like I was watching a Formula 1 race couple nights ago and at the end of the race everyone is happy for eachother and they give high fives/hugs/etc.
so that shows a lot of sportsmanship also, which is essential to any sport in my opinion.

Grid postions are set in a qualifying session. This is not a race.

The first leg of qualifying (20 mins) sees The Top 17 drivers progress to the second leg (So the 17 drivers who have posted the quickest laps in the 20 mins). So 7 are eliminated and where they finished in the first leg is where they'll start the race.

The second leg of qualifying (15 Mins) sees the Top 10 drivers progress to the third leg (So the 10 drivers who have posted the quickest laps in the 15 mins). So another 7 are eliminated. Where they finished in the second leg is where they'll start the race.

The third leg of qualifying (10 Mins) sees the grid of the Top 10 decided. Wherever you end up is where you start the race. (So if you do the quickest lap in this sessions you start the race in 1st. If you do the second quickest lap you start second and so on). These Top 10 drivers must start the race on the tyres they did their fastet lap on in the third leg (unless there is rain).

From the USA here :D, midwest, so kind of a lone duck when it comes to formula 1.

Which part of the midwest are you from? I know what you mean about the lack of passion for F1; most people seem to only know about NASCAR or CART. I'm originally from a country where F1 supporters are fairly easy to find so it was a bit of a culture shock for me coming to live in the US of A!

Originally Missouri, now I live in Iowa.

Welcome! I'm from Ohio. :wavey:

Yeah, it sucks that F1 fans are such a tiny minority in the US, but we're still here. I think I read somewhere that there's actually around 10 million of us nationwide. It's just that 10 million is relatively small considering the US population is like 309 million, so we're like one in thirty-one people. I do know of a handful in person. It just sucks that it's hard to find someone to discuss F1 with without going online, whereas if you're a NASCAR fan you only need to go five feet to run into somebody to talk NASCAR with.

10 million??? :eek::nono:

SpeedTV ratings are around 600,000 viewers per race! 10 million F1 fans seems too high of a number for US

Including replays? Lots of Americans I'd imagine don't get up early on Sunday to watch the races in Europe, so they watch the replay or DVR it.

NASCAR races doesn't conflict with Sunday Mass.

You'll have to wait another 43 days or so for the new season to begin.
Starting grid position is determined by a rather exciting qualification procedure on the Saturday before the actual race.

cool cool cool, thanks :)

and is it just me or does Formula 1 seem to revolve only around 3 teams? Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren?
or does this vary season by season (just like football or soccer)

There is another Great Team called Williams, owned by Sir Frank Williams! they are the proud owners of 9 WCC and 7 WDC titles! They are in a slump atm but who wasnt! Even the great Ferrari was in one! Hopefully Williams will be a contender again!

I don't watch f1 on speed, I admittedly download it on torrents for the bbc broadcasts. I tried watching a fox sports version I think it was the Canadian grandprix and all they did for the majority of it was focus on schumacher and name drop. the accents of americans talking abotu F1 drive me crazy, and I am an american LOL.

There is a certain charm or charisma that comes with the bbc broadcasts I enjoy.

Well, basically no is the answer to that. Ferrari and McLaren have always been towards the front end of the pack though. Red Bull only came good when F1 had a huge rule change in 2009 - they have the best designer in Adrian Newey and so were able to make the jump forward. I find wikipedia is a great source if you want to get a general overview of past F1 seasons, if only because it's easy to navigate through all the info :)

Sadly so, last time Williams had the WCC was 1997 courtesy of Jacques Villeneuve, and since then, the best season they had was 2003 where they were 2nd with 144 points. Great shame, as Williams were one of the teams that drew me into F1 to start with.
