Hate to break it to you, but it's not the UK they dislike, it's specifically the English! I'm not advocating it, laughing about it or saying it's right, but it is the truth. If you go anywhere in Europe (I have personal experience of this in Spain, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Greece and Turkey, and have heard the same thing about many other countries both in Europe and further afield), they'll ask if you're English with a bit of a sneer, and when you say 'no, I'm Scottish', (and I've seen the same friendly reaction to the Irish), they tend to break into a smile and act a lot warmer toward you then they do to the next English people that come along...
I don't know why it is, I just know that it is the way it is...
And Tex - I'm quite sure that you were just teasing to seek a reaction, as I'm sure you know full well for hundreds of years there were different kings and queens in Scotland and England. Historically and culturally the two are very different. The same can be said of Wales, and obviously Northern Ireland being on a completely different island. Also, the legal systems are completely different in England and Scotland, especially so in terms of criminal justice.
