Freak accident. How often does the wheel itself fail like that?

what abot lewis' DNF is Spain? I'd say when a tyre flies off it's realiability, or just bad luck?

Weird stuff that happens.
I thought/think it was some stress-related failure on a track that punishes that side, but many people (and Mc's statement i think it was) thought it was a defective part... dont know. But it hasnt happened again, and it only happened to Lewis. Weird failure. Not like Vettel's brake issues or Ferrari's engines (see customer teams also)...

Lewis has had two gear box problems, a wheel and an engine. Thats not good.

From what i remember, in Hungary he had a failure (was it gearbox?) and then the wheel thing...
I dont remember the engine, and the other GB was caused by his crash.

Not as good a previous yrs.. but still Mc has been the most reliable of the top 3 teams

Of course McLaren will need to be reliable to win either of this years titles, given how far behind in points they are. I remember a time when it was commonplace to have engine, gearbox, hydraulic and brake failures, that was part of the game, but that was a time when F1 was really pushing the technical envelope before FIA meddling stifled innovation. F1 fans these days make such a big issue of mechanical failures because failures don't have very often, for us "old timers" it's normal for failures to happen!

You got some problems in that department already?:P

Nothing that some purple pills won't solve :P:hehe:

mclaren's reliability over the last few seasons from what i can remember has been fairly solid, bar the odd wheel/brake/gearbox failure, and i think the point that mclaren are still in the championship due to the fact that the red bull has had its own problems too...just hope that mclaren can be 100% reliable for the final three races.. :)

Yes, failures were more prone to happen before, I remember in the 90's if a car lasts 5 GPs in a row, it's something pretty impressive.

But it's about expectations and relativity. You can't compare McLarens reliability to olden days, you have to compare them to others NOW. My point is, in relation to other teams they almost always tend to lose out. Sometimes it is said the team has grown too big and diverse (MTC, etc) but I believe they have a dedicated sector which is focused on the race team, so why is McLaren still faltering time to time?

Cheaper manufacturers processes; human error; or is it Lewis' driving style that doesn't suit the part, I can't recall a single failure for Jenson this year.

btw, I wasn't really comparing; just making the point that it's a massive issue when a car fails today, no-one batted an eyelid back in the day!

So Lewis broke two gearboxes in 1 weekend? How did he survive 2 whole years before this without breaking a single gearbox?

Once again, in cars today it is very difficult to break a car by your driving style unless you have a collision. If you are doing something which contributes to breaking the car, the engineers are all equipped with the necessary info and telemetry, you can be sure they'd see a pattern and tell the driver to cut it out.

By not crashing in practice.
