I've said it before and I'll say it again, VW does not sound a name that would be at home at F1. Not that this will change the chances of course.

Toyota did?

True that. It's more snappy than Volkswagen (Even though they will be named VAG or VW). I guess as volkswagen are suppliers in Formula 3 already then their intrest has turned to F1 as well.

I'm a VAG fan of course, but my secret wish is for Saab/Spyker to come in as an engine supplier if they do go the 1.X liter turbo route in 2013.

That would be fantastic! So tell me a bit more about this 1 litre turbo engines, I've not heard about this.

Last time Lotus had Renault engines in them, Both Mansell and Senna got their first wins. Ah what a time. They were nearly a top team then, and once they lost that engine they fell to the back of the grid, never to climb forward again. Wouldn't it be magical to see Lotus up there mixing it up with McLaren again?

Oh so they old turbo engines that used to put out near 1000bhp? I remember. Yes and that would be great to have lotus back up there and williams more prominent too!

I think the BMW had 1400 hp, but in any case at the peak most good ones had over 1200.

I thought Mansell's first win was in the Williams Honda in 1985. He nearly won in Monaco 84 in the Lotus but like many others the rain got the best of him. But you're right, what a great era of motorsport rivalry between Senna, Mansell, Prost, Piquet. I think similarities lie between 1986 and this season because like Red Bull the two Williams drivers back then had an intense rivalry and Prost scooped the rewards through consistency. This season is better though because Jenson is not fading away from Lewis and the likes of Fernando, Kubica and Rosberg are in the mix as well. And don't forget that in the latter half of the year the Force India was the car to have at the fast tracks like Spa and Monza. Hopefully Sutil will bring that advantage again this year and really spice things up.

Mansell's first win was GP of Europe in 1985 at Brands Hatch in a Williams Honda.

I remember it being closer to 1300 (under 60 lbs/4 bar of boost!!!) but they were just guesstimating anyway because I don't think anyone ever put one on a dyno. That's more HP/cu. in. on 93 octane Sunoco (plus a dollop of snake oil) than the top fuel dragsters of the day produced on nitromethane.

They only used full boost for qualy because engine lifespan was very limited under that much pressure and petrol consumption was astronomical. They turned the boost down to ~800-900 hp for the race and sometimes still had to further turn it down to prevent running out of fuel before the finish. They also had liquid-cooled brakes and the winner would pull over and stop immediately after crossing the finish line -- no victory lap -- to preserve their chances of making spec weight.

:yikes: 60 lbs?!?!?! I'm sure with that kind of pressure some of the engines would have come back as one solidly fused hunk of metal instead of hundreds of individually moving parts.

A few sources say 1500 but I think they were being extremely optimistic.

Cosworth, Lotus agree to end deal

By Pablo Elizalde Sunday, September 12th 2010, 21:34 GMT

Cosworth has announced that it has reached an agreement to end its current engine supply deal with the Lotus team.

The move paves the way for Lotus to sign a deal with Renault, with whom the team has reached an agreement in principle for a supply of engines, gearboxes and transmissions, as revealed by AUTOSPORT earlier this week.

"Cosworth has reached an agreement in principle with Lotus Racing whereby the team's Cosworth engine supply agreement will come to a conclusion at the end of the current Formula 1 season," said Cosworth in a statement on Sunday night.

"This agreement is subject to contract and until the agreement is signed, neither party will be making any further comment."

Lotus driver Jarno Trulli retired from today's Italian Grand Prix with a gearbox problem, promting team boss Tony Fernandes to post on Twitter: "Jarno retired [due to] gearbox. Oh well, making decisions easier."

Done and dusted now, more or less.
