It was a very good strategy. As by having an early stop, Alonso would be in clear air while those he was racing would be in trains. The early safety car period just magnified the effect of the strategy.
The idea was to try and pass as many cars as possible not caring about conserving the super-softs. Then pit at the 1st SC for the rest of the race. It changed slightly because SC was on the 1 lap, but the idea just took a small variant. I was surprised though to see he almost got past Lewis.
