This is stupid. If teams are unable to just make a race then they shouldn't be a team, in extraordinary circumstances (like a natural disaster, fire at the factory or something) then it should be allowed but not just to miss a race.

i think it's a decent idea, teams that are serious about the championship wouldn't miss races unless they really had no other option. If it helps new teams get started, it's a good thing imo

Jean Todt was speaking about it today, he confirms all teams can miss up to three races*, and I don't recall anything about a million euro fine.

*But let's be honest, the only ones likely to to are the new ones (Though probably except Virgin) and also Force India. Maybe Sauber but I have to imagine sponsors are going to appear on their car pretty rapidly.

Lotus is also well funded so i doubt they'll miss any

its gonna be Just Campos and USF1 missing the odd race.

Which is pathetic considering you had the option of Lola, Prodrive etc..

Do any of you buy into the theory that the FIA didn't allow new teams in if they didn't want to use Cosworth engines. For me that is the only explanation for outfits like Lola and Prodrive getting turned down when Campos got approved. I'm still reserving judgment on USF1, I thought it smacked of a publicity stunt when I first read about it but I hope I'm to be made to eat my words. Campos and Manor looked ambitious too and I didn't expect much from them but with Virgin getting on board with Manor it seems to have shaped up nicely.
I can't help feeling that if Lola or Prodrive had decided to use Cosworths, they would be there instead though.
Stefan look about as prepared as any of the new teams but they have the diabolical mr Coughlan working for them so I'm not sure how keen the FIA are on them.

I agree. Cosworth wouldn't enter the sport unless three teams used their engines at the minimum. At the time, all other teams had contracts for engines in 2010, so the only way to ensure Cosworth entered was to force the three new teams to use them. I really hope Stefan get Campos' place at the moment, because Campos have one month left and are showing no signs of being even remotely ready.

Not sure about Lola but Prodrive wanted Aston Engines or Merc Intialy - then a full aston works team.

So it must be a big reason.

Its daft they turned down a Works Aston Martin team for a Gp2 team buying a car.

Yup the whole thing stinks if you ask me. I'm not really that excited to see Cosworth engines back tbh, I don't even particularly like the DFV...

I think the whole cosworth stuff really has something fishy there.

At ant rate - why hasn't this been posted yet?

Todt has cleared up these rumours and insisted that all teams are bound to attend and may be penalised if they miss races.

My understanding of the whole teams can miss races thing is that they will be penalised in some way if they miss 1,2 or 3 but after that, they will be thrown out.

Out of nowhere, that is suddenly what the FiA is saying. Miss a race, face the consequences.

Makes you wonder why their president implied otherwise earlier this week

Press Release
FIA Formula One World Championship 10/02/2010
PARTICIPATION IN EVENTS COUNTING TOWARDS

THE FIA FORMULA ONE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Following recent reports on the interpretation of clauses in the Concorde Agreement concerning the concept of a Team's ‘participation’ in the FIA Formula One World Championship, the FIA wishes to make the following clarification:

From a sporting and regulatory point of view, each Team that has registered for the Championship is obliged to take part in every event of the season. Any failure to take part, even for just one Championship event, would constitute an infringement both of the Concorde Agreement and the FIA Regulations.

For Media Information Purposes - No Regulatory Value.

It doesn't seem like the FIA has published anything which indicates what form the punishment for an infringement would be.
