20 Years? I think that's a pretty bold proclamation on the part of Newey. Whilst CFD might not be 100% ready to go it alone right now, it probably will be before 2030.

How many race winning cars has Newey got to his name? Now think about Nick Worth?

In Formula One? Nick Wirth has one, I believe.

Yeah, i think the Benettons in the late 90's managed the odd race win (Berger in Germany), however, he is associated with far too many godawful F1 cars for my liking.

The problem with CFD is that it's only as good as the programmer, and somewhat ironically, at this point in time only a relative genius like Newey could truly help maximise it's potential. However, he is one of the few humans capable of designing brilliant cars without it... These sorts of things are very capable of delivering great results on paper that do not translate to the track, hence why real testing will always be preferential to engineers. The same thing goes for windtunnels to an extent. An example being that walrus-nosed Williams - it performed great in the windtunnel (ie, in theory), yet was badly affected by external factors like crosswinds and turbulent air from other cars and so was a relative flop.

Me thinks it was absolute not relative :hehe:

All I can say is that I hope its effective, would be great to see a cheaper and easier method brought to the mainstream. It would do a nice job to level the playing field between the budget and expensive teams.

It was actually the car that Berger won that race with in 1997. :)

Everytime I see this thread topic I seem to have a flashback of some girls parents chasing me down the street. I say thanx to the thread starter for bringing that horrifying night back for me. I would just like to say it wasn't my fault at all.

I get the impression that Branson thinks F1 is a simple game and anyone can build a championship team.

Branson was never around F1 until last season when he was hanging around the Brawn team, only offering up some support after they finished 1 and 2 in Australia. He has bitten off more than he can chew.

Virgin racing are going to be the laughing stock of the field.

I tend to agree with what you said about Branson. There can be no mistaking his business intuition, and I respect him a lot for the kind of investments he chooses (Virgin Galactic) but what it is really going to come down to is how well Booth can run the show, from what I have seen on paper I'm not convinced, but I will hold judgment until I see a few races.

He's a neighbour of Reynard and has flirted with the idea of motor racing before. Good at business, got an interest and has friends in the business. Don't know if its enough though.

I have no doubt Branson has flirted with many ideas in his time.

His car will be an epic failure to an massive audience. However when he releases his annual biography in 10 years time, he will mention his time in the 'F1 game' and how he revolutionised the sport by being the first CFD produced car, saving millions of dollars etc..... If any of you have read his book you will know what I am talking about.

If (hypothetically) his car was so rubbish it was hurting the 'Virgin Brand', could he pull out halfway through a season?

Theoretically, yes. But if the team kept racing, the name wouldn't be changed, so the effect of pulling out would be limited. They'd have to shut down the operation entirely ala Super Aguri.
