And here I am stuck in America... why can't I just pay the British TV licence fee and have free access to the BBC iPlayer

find a UK proxy and use that to watch BBC One Live, or try Zattoo?

I have already tried just about every free UK proxy available, and none of them are fast enough to stream media; and Zattoo isn't available in the US
