The FIA agreed not to pursue action against Piquet for his role in uncovering the details of the scandal.

Alonso, who attended the hearing in Paris, was also cleared of any involvement in the race-fixing scheme and the FIA added it "thanks him for cooperating with enquiries".

However, the World Motor Sport Council has found Renault guilty of breaking its sporting code, finding; "breaches relating to the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix to be of unparalleled severity.

"They not only compromised the integrity of the sport but also endangered the lives of spectators, officials, other competitors and Nelson Piquet Jr. himself.

"The WMSC considers that offences of this severity merit permanent disqualification from the FIA Formula One World Championship.

"However, in particular the steps taken by Renault F1 to identify and address the failings within its team and condemn the actions of the individuals involved, the WMSC has decided to suspend Renault F1's disqualification until the end of the 2011 season."

FIA president Max Mosley added: Max Mosley "The blame has been placed where it should be placed and it's the right decision.

"The penalty that we've imposed is the harshest one we can but because Renault have demonstrated that they have no moral responsibility for what took place, it would be wrong in the circumstances to impose an immediate penalty."

Piquet gets off with it because of his role in "uncovering the details of the scandal" At least I have the satisfaction of knowing that he'll most likely never drive in F1 again, despite getting immunity.

Renault got a lighter sentence because they got rid of Briatore and Symonds which is a bit of a joke. They deserved a far harsher punishment than a 2 year suspended ban.

However I am glad to see Briatore with a permanent ban, I just don't understand why Symonds' punishment is much less severe.

Renault got off incredibly lightly, a similar punishment to what McLaren got for Spy-gate would have been appropriate. Of course it was lenient because of the risk of losing Renault next year, whereas McLaren was never going to leave F1 so go punished heavily. Never mind two tier racing, we seem to have adopted two tier punishments instead!

Ron Dennis didn't resigned, if he had accepted his responsability don't think McLaren had received that fine, and that's "for sure".

Ron Dennis was never found guilty of being part of the spy-gate saga, infact Ron Dennis went to the FIA when Alonso tried to blackmail McLaren.

He was the responsible of the team, he knew everything. He was not "found guilty" as Piquetinho this time.

He is Spanish so has a biased view of how things went on there

This is a weird outcome... the penalty seems more like a "warning" and less a punishment for Renault...
Which makes me wonder if Mclaren/Mercedes had gotten off lighter had they sacrificed someone of high rank (ie Ron Dennis) ??

I think this Renault thing was worse than the spy issue. However, really thinking about it Mclaren got off lightly: they only took away WCC, but the team itself was never put in a position to leave, no heads rolled, both drivers were allowed to go for WDC.... so the only issue seemed to be only money, which Mclaren/Mercedes had... while Renault, i'm sure will now face a harder struggle to gain credibility/sponsors and to restructure the team without 2 key figures (3 if Fernando leaves), than Mclaren had to deal with.

I'm not happy with the 'adjustable' leniency in the FIA, and definitely dont think its fair that all competitors are not judged equally. I believe this was an oportunity to make an example... but fair enough, at least we wont lose Renault and hopefully the FIA will be restructured anyways after Mosley is out.

I admire you because you are so unbiased... :cloud9: LOL

I was hoping for a mega-fine but well I should have expect this. What happened during McLaren's spy-gate saga was bad but I can't help feeling that the FIA have got it the wrong way round, McLaren should have got the suspended ban and Renault the mega-fine ... what Renault did was not just cheating but had major health and safety implications - lives could have been lost. Nope, this was yet another bad decision by the FIA.

Piquet was not tried whereas Ron Dennis and the McLaren organisation were despite only a handful of personnel being involved. Dennis only knew of the allegations when Alonso threatened to go public with the illegal activities that the Spaniard himself was involved in. Dennis never denied what went on within the McLaren team and dealt with the guilty parties accordingly. Alonso was given immunity for testifying against McLaren like Piquet! It's a BS punishment that Renault were handed; two tier punishment!

I wonder if / how Piquet is punished.

Afterall, he is the one who crashed the car, so he had as much knowledge of the incident as Briatore and Symonds.

Have you not been reading the case at all.By giving evidene he is immune.

Think of all the money the other F1 teams spent to race in Singapore just to get cheated... Renault should have been heavily fined.

Other than that, the punishment fits the crime.
