Am I reading that right? Kimi would be driving for McLaren while Ferrari paid his salary, plus Alonso's? If that were to happen I would lose what little respect for Ferrari I have. In today's financial environment, if they throw 49 million out the window in order to upgrade from Kimi to Alonso I would be more than shocked.

Aren't the 49m for the entire contract, i.e., 3 years? So, they'd only pay the last year out?

nope thats his annual salary around £20 million a year

I would love to see Kimi back at McLaren. Just imagine Kimi and Lewis vs Alonso and Massa next year.

4 drivers in the top 2 teams capable of winning the title. Lets hope they are the best 2 teams next year.

I think they probably will be, but even if they're not it'll still be exciting to see what those 4 drivers will do.

Within their own teams yeah. I'd be surprised if Alonso and Hamilton didn't have the edge - but seeing them pushed every race could produce a special season.

Does it not work like most professional sports, where another team can buy out a contract. Like football or baseball? Like a free agent?

 For some reason, i think Kimi fits better at Mclaren than he ever will at Ferrari. Again, i would have preferred Kimi + Alonso, but i guess it would be a bit messier... wouldnt like Massa to be the default #2 guy, but that will probably depend on his injury and the form he gets upon return.

By the way, buying out contracts is done all the time in baseball and other sports... i also think they can get an arrangement where Mclaren pays part of the remaining Kimi contract and Ferrari the rest (after all, Ferrari are going cheap on Massa so they probably have some $ to expend).
Or maybe Santander being a sponsor of both teams, will end up picking up the driver bill anyways....... lots of options (including other drivers as well), and i'm sure this is what Mclaren/Ferarri are going through right now, and the reason they dont want people getting over anxious.

You know what's funny? He left McLaren because they weren't giving him a competitive car, then once he was gone the car was the most competitive. Yet he ended up with the title so you can't say he made the wrong move. I say he would have also won it in the McLaren, and more handily at that.
Meanwhile, Alonso DEFINITELY made the right choice moving to McLaren then, because the Renault fell into the toilet. It's as if he knew it would. He might have got the title too if his conditions were as he expected. He certainly had a better car than Kimi.
Anyway this time it looks like once again they are both moving to better cars. Alonso is getting Kimi's sloppy hand me downs, but it's anyone's guess what team will have the best car next year though.

I think this is honestly a good and believable rumour. But what makes it more funny is that no one thought it? Ron Denisses 2 fav boys in 1 car!

Bud you have the dream :cloud9:

I would argue that the Ferrari and McLaren were pretty closely matched in 2007, I don't think the McLaren had a definitive advantage. I agree that with some more sensible driver management for McLaren, Alonso would almost certainly won the title that year. What I find Ironic about Kimi's move from McLaren to Ferrari is that it was motivated by the fact that McLaren had absolutely no reliability whenever the produced a fast car. Now he's at Ferrari, they have worse reliability than McLaren...

I hope next year,if kimi does come back he doesn't bring the reliability problems back with him.

I agree from mainly both posts. But i find that he was happier at McLaren and that Ron Dennis had a soft spot for him for sure. But i think he would fit in more at McLaren rather than Ferrari. Ferrari just does not suit his style, He won down to the car, he has talen undoubtly. But just at times the car seems more fitter than the driver at times. It happens in allot of sports, just Like with Vale in some races. People would disagree but i think Kimi was at the top of his game in McLaren when challenging Michael and Juan i think it was? Ferrari just took advantage of him at the peak of it and he succeeded. I think McLaren could pump the love back into him. Would be awesome the 4 of them. Kimi & Alonso are pretty the same personallity wise, and Massa & Lewis are the same personallity wise/ Would be an awesome season. But i would have to admit the uncertainty of this season has proved a success in my books. In which has left me watching endlessly. If we had a season like 2008, that was beaitufl, but it was down to 2 people. In 2009 we have 4 people still. Which i find very exctiging, plus Lewis is crawling back? But in 2010 also, i doubt Massa will be up to speed until the 4th or 5th round. Alonso if at Ferrari would win the first race. Just like Kimi in 2007 if i'm not mistaken.

maybe it is Kimi's driving style that makes the car unreliable?

Check his teammates car's and you'll get the answer.

With Kimi back at McLaren you have two drivers capable of podium finish or at least scoring points. The drivers lineup of Brawn, Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren in 2010 could make for the most exciting and competitive racing season ever.
