I expect him to be able to manage it. GP2 cars are closer to F1 cars than the F3s that Alguersuari was coming from. And Grosjean has at least tested older Renaults during the winter.

Im expecting Grosjean to immediately do better than that Piquet fella and come close to some points at Valencia or at least a top 10 finish.

Romain Grosjean has clarified that, as a Formula One driver, he considers himself French rather than Swiss.

The 23-year-old, promoted to replace Nelson Piquet at Renault for the balance of the 2009 season, was actually born and still resides in Geneva, moving the Swiss media this week to hail Switzerland's second current F1 racer alongside Sebastien Buemi.

But keen eyed and eared observers will have seen only the French flag on Grosjean's overalls and heard only La Marseillaise on the podium after his GP2 race wins.

Grosjean, whose father is Swiss and mother is French, holds duel citizenship and has both a Swiss and French passport, but his racing license is issued by the French federation FFSA.

"In motor sport, my nationality is clearly French, because all of the support in my career was coming from France, never from Switzerland," he is quoted as saying by the Swiss daily newspaper Le Matin.

Grosjean added this week: "Renault has supported me since 2006 and it was only with their help that I could afford to continue racing."

It is reported that until the age of 14, when he began his motor racing career, Grosjean was headed for a future in skiing, until his father baulked at the rising influence of doping in the winter sport.

Well, he was born in Geneva. Geneva is actually partly french anyway.

I've been to Geneva airport, and half the airport is in france, and the other half is in Switzerland. So I think its fair for him to call himself french, since he seems genuinely dual nationality (unlike some drivers). Its a bit like me living in Northern Ireland (which is split between the UK and Ireland) But although Northern Ireland is ruled by the british government, I would still rather race under an Irish license.

Anyways, I look forward to see Grosjean race this year. I rather like the guy, so I have high hope anyway.

Grosjean managed in his first race what Piquet couldnt do in 1-1/2 yrs: He had one very good Q1, a great lap to put it in P4 vs P10 for Fernando. Although he couldnt squeeze into Q3 he looked pretty close and decent. Somehow he seems closer to Fernando than Piquet ever managed to look...

In Piquet's debut, he qualified twenty first whilst Alonso managed twelfth. Here, Grosjean made fourteenth to Alonso's eighth. That's pretty good.

I was very impressed with his performance and for some strange reason I seem to like the guy but know nothing about him.
