The only essential requirement is that it doesn't require a piece of proprietary software to transfer music/videos etc. to and from the device.

And the fact that I already have a nice phone

I have a cheap Chinese MP4 player from Ebay and that is good enough for me. I use it in the Gym and have it on when in my open top car and it loud enough to hear the music.

OK it might not be 32 bit decoded etc, but to be honest I can not tell the difference.

It can play music, but I'm storage-limited. I don't need a new phone - this is quite new and does its job. It would be pointless footing the bill for an iPhone and associated contract when all I want is a music-player...

well personally i would buy a cheap USB MP3 player wait out the contract for an iPhone or if an iPhone isnt your thing theres other phones on the market that double as a music player. I used to own a model of Sony Erricson walkman which was pretty good.

but i just love not having to worry about carrying a phone and also a ipod its great having it all in one!
