thats bad must have a broken jaw or somthing.

I hope it is his Jaw as it looked as if he had a bad knock above his eye. If it is his actual skull its very serious, he would also miss the rest of the season nearly.

Massa suffers skull damage, concussion

By Pablo Elizalde Saturday, July 25th 2009, 15:55 GMT

Felipe Massa will need to undergo surgery after it emerged he has suffered bone damage of his skull and a brain concussion in his accident at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The Brazilian will be forced to miss the race after he was hit in the head by debris believed to belong to Rubens Barrichello's car.

Massa was airlifted to a Budapest hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

Ferrari said in a statement that Massa will need to undergo surgery and will have to stay under observation in intensive care for an undisclosed period of time.

"After the accident during the qualifying session of the Grand Prix of Hungary, Felipe Massa was airlifted to the AEK hospital in Budapest," the statement said. "Felipe was conscious at the arrival at the hospital and his general conditions remain stable.

"Following a complete medical examination it emerged that he had suffered a cut on his forehead, a bone damage of his skull and a brain concussion. These conditions need to be operated on after which he will remain under observation in intensive care."

The team said further information will be released later tonight.

Have just spoken to Barrichello about the Massa incident. He thinks after the events of Brands Hatch and today, something has to be done

What can be done? F1 car's with enclosed Cockpits?

Possibly. Even semi-covered cockpits would provide an extra level of protection, but there's a downside. If the car catches fire, the driver may be sealed in the car. Similarly, after a bad accident marshals may not be able to get to the driver in time to get them the medical attention that they need.

Hmm. He would have three weeks of recovery time. I'm not sure that they would want him racing in Valencia, which means Ferrari could end up having to run a driver that has only limited experience of driving this year's cars.

I hope Massa is well again as soon as possible, poor guy. :(

During qualifying Eddie Jordan said that he'd been told by a reliable source that Massa received a knock to the chin. Is it possible that that's the damage the doctors are talking of? I hope it is :(

I don't know. I was thinking it was the damage done above his eye, which looked quite serious. Either way it's not good :(

I thought Ferrari had said that was a superficial cut.

I'm not sure. The information seems to be coming a little at a time, so it's hard to piece together.

Broken Jaw? where did that come from?

as for "something has to be done" what exactly can be done about random acts like this? its the nature of the motorsport beast.... its dangerous, the only thing that could stop something like this is staying home and not racing!
