Moron - or maybe not: nice way to make a million...

The owner wouldn't make a million; how many insurance companies pay out the full value of the insurance? The owner will be lucky if s/he gets the $2m value back!

That's for sure not a regular car insurance deal he's got. So, no haggling on the side of the insurance company - they'll pay up what the price of the policy states (unless they can prove some sort of foul play).

As we don't know what type of insurance policy we can only speculate but I can't see any insurance company agreeing to pay out more than the car is worth. It's recommended that insurance policies are worth more than the insured item to ensure that most of the value of the product is recovered; I expect a payout of about $1.75m.

Marlene Dietrich had her legs insured for $1m - the value of her legs could be disputed based on what the yield of tissue and minerals (if ground up) would be dollar-wise. There is more to the value of something than the material value itself such as sentimental value, etc.

When insuring body parts it comes down to earning potential of that body part(s) which is far away from car insurance no matter what the car; any material possession has a fixed value, which depreciates in most cases unless it's an antique which tends to appreciate and frankly the McLaren F1 wasn't that great a car to start with; from various reviews I have read about the car over the years. I have never found an insurance company that gives a damn about sentimental value. If its a sentimental object no amount of money could compensate for the loss of that item, everything has it's price in our world!

OK the bottom line is that someone who can afford a McLaren F1 is going to have it fully insured as they did not get rich by making stupid and uninformed desicions.

We don't know that; it could be spoilt little rich boy that inherited millions or won the lottery and not actually earned the money through good judgement or planning!

Insurance companies are not in the business of paying out more than they can get away with; I'd be interested to see what the final payout is/was?

:bs:

You're entitled to your opinion... from what I have read and seen from various motoring shows and magazines over the years, it looks pretty, no one can deny that and is fast as all hell but falls over in the corners being very skittish and hard to control (Let's face it the average person to buy this car is some rich middle aged man who has no idea of how to handle a car at speed in corners); for $2m I'd expect my sports car to be perfect! I would rather have a Nissan GT-R than a piece of road jewellery like the McLaren F1. As I said it's my opinion, that doesn't mean that it's BS!!!

You'd spend more than £7,500 on a car?

Yes if I was in the financial position to do so; but right now I probably wouldn't! I have more important things to spend money on than a new car, priorities!

It won Lemans has the GT-R done that yet?

nope.

But you see what your doing is your taking a 2009 Car thats built on the principles (carbon fibre monoque etc..etc..) that the Mclaren F1 was built on.

Thats like saying Well my Ford Focus is better than your model T ford.

Yes! of course it is! thats beacuse the model t is 100 years old! the GTR is a car of a diffrent Decade the Mclaren F1.

Its $2 Mil btw because its rare not because it was original sold at that price also.

The GTR is loaded up with alot of computers and built with more up to date ideas if it wasn't better than the F1 wouldn't they be going backwards.

Compare the Ferrai F40 to the Ferrari 430 Scuderia whats going to be better? the 430 of course whats going to be more expensive? the F40 since its rare.

Wait until McLaren bring out there new sports car and we'll see what your silly japanse suped up micra is all about eh? :P

That's all well and good; I prefer the GTR, I like cars with lots of technology that will enhance my road driving experience; I don't want a stripped out racecar! I don't believe any car is worth $1m let alone $2m, the GTR at £50,000 is far more sensible and delivers just as many thrills on the track and a much smoother sensible ride on public roads. I don't buy a car because of sporting pedigree; I buy a car because it suits me; and I enjoy driving it, the badge means nothing to me!

to call it a piece of road jewellery shows your knowledge of anything 4 wheels so no point going any further with you!

But I must say the McLarenF1 a supercar was designed in the early 90s while you're comparing it to a brand new GT car..... Well done again sparky

My knowledge of cars may not be as good as yours but I stand by my opinion of calling it "road jewellery" with it's gold lined engine bay and gold plated toolkit. I'm sure you'll come back with a raft of technical innovations but $2m for a road car, it's like having a diamond ring, people buy it for it's posing value not what the car can do on the track.

I am not ignorant of the McLaren F1's prowess, I have read the technical sheets and seen how it performs on the track and I still don't rate it very highly, infact I would rate the Ferrari F40 over the F1; and the Ferrari was built five years before the McLaren F1, that's not comparing modern machinery to 15 year old machinery is it?

It's my preference, because it's different to yours doesn't make it wrong; get over it!
