The Brawn is far nicer to its tyres even when being pushed hard in a long stint. This, combined with their fundamentally high pace, means they don't have to run to the maximum 100% of the time.

So yes, they do have a margin. Jenson didn't win 3 races on 1 engine by accident.

not sure myself margin's are flexible.

i think they have a RACE PACE margin but not a qualifying one.

I was talking about race pace. The car does well in qualifying because it is fundamentally quick with quick drivers. The Red Bull is theoretically the better qualifying car.

And yet they put their cars in the front row, with a much heavier load... if that isnt a Qualifying margin, i wonder what is.
Besides, who cares about Q2?! Q3 is where the grid's defined.

1 lap quali was about fuel loads too and it penalised unreliability, discouraging overtaking. and it never really led to any more unpredictable grids as the old format. The old one was my favourite because it wasn't contrived or false. whoever is fastest gets pole...simple

i always thought single lap and to an extent the current format are less climactic because with the old system you got a real 'calm before the storm' factor, it was more exciting for me

Yeah when evryone just wanders about for 1 hour and trys to post the best lap?

Nah, I think keep the triple part quali knock-out style. It makes things more exciting, rather than an hour long session. It creates a bit more excitement, whenever you consider that grids Suzuka 05 and Monza 08 are more likely. Considering that once a driver makes a mistake, he's under pressure. We nearly, very nearly seen Button go out during Monaco quali. If Lewis was still in it, and if Buemi managed not to make a mistake on his lap, Button would've been knocked out, with no chance of redeeming that posistion.

Also, considering what people were saying about fuel loads. Fuel loads are just gone next year sure. So really we're back to the way it was during the 90's (least I think it was the early 90's) Racing wasn't too bad back then. :D

But will the drivers have to qualify on a full tank in Q3? I like the Q1/2/3 system, low fuel in Q3 would make it more or less perfect though... :)

From what I understand, with refueling gone, Q3 will be like Q2, on fumes. Then they fill the tank to the gills for the race.

That's exactly it. All three qualifying stages will be identical save for the number of cars and length.
