Yes, when they botch it (wrong placement of noose, wrong design of noose, etc.), then you may suffer a longer, more painful death. Thus, not recommended as a means to try suicide.

So, the Iraqis botched the second hanging (Saddam's half-brother or somtin'). The rope was too long and so he fell 8 ft, while a man of his size and weight should only fall about 6 ft until the noose starts its job. Consequently, his head flew off, severed from his neck, the body fell down and spilled all the blood, while his head was still dangling in the noose above.
