I can sort of side with Silverstone on this one, Bernie fees to host a race are fairly high and it doesn't leave much change for course improvements.

Silverstone don't want private investment because returns aren't enough to pay for finance.

It's either Bernie or the Government, someone has to dip into their pockets...

Problem is, the last time Bernie gave them 40 Million pounds they built a car park for the members...

Well, Northern Rock has £25m of our money so maybe they could get a mortgage from there? or not as th case may be!

Sponsors - how about the Vodaphone Silverstone Motor Racing Circuit? or McLaren Silverstone (PR benefits, 'local' test track, £25mil? drop in the ocean - even after the fine) and they could charge Ferrari to race there!!! and Bernie & Max would have to buy their own tickets!! the benfits are endless - whats Rons 'phone number?

What a cracking idea. McLaren should buy the place lock stock and barrell. The RAC had the chance in the 60s and turned their noses up at it. I bet they're kicking themselves now.
McLaren owning the place would be a good way around it.

it's all very well Mclaren owning the track for 3 days of a grand prix weekend but what about the rest of the year? how are they going to make money apart from hosting a few races for lesser formulas and motorcycles?

Those lesser formulas are the bread and butter of the place. The GP is very glitzy but not a financial winner. The opportunity of collecting rents on the proposed technology park and other property on the land would be a bonus too.

One last point. Would it actually have to make a profit for an F1 team owning it anyway? The potential to write off against tax is obvious.....

Thats why BRDC are having a problem raising the cash, but a big time sponsor like Vodaphone, Red Bull etc, or especially a British based constructor, like McL, there would have other benefits.
Lower formulas cost less to stage and are probably profitable and other other activities - race drive school, experience days etc etc should make Silverstone viable in its own right. The benfits to a constructor of a local 'private' test track of the calibre of a revamped Silverstone would be a major bonus. Evn if they didn't own it lock stock & barrel but were major share holders.
I must say that I dont know the figures but I beleive that the circuit is proffitable now, they just dont have the funds to upgrade it.

you could try deMure's suggestion

Bernie has gotten so rich out of this sport he should put something back and turn Silverstone into the Jewel of the F1 calendar...

my argument to that is why should silverstone get special treatment? magny-cour needs an overhaul so should bernie fund that as well? It shouldn't be up to him to bail out tracks in financial trouble. the governments of each country should definetly help costs as grand prix's help the economy with the influx of fans each year

You're right. Bernie wouldn't fund it because it would be of little value to him, but I think that it would be of value to a constructor or major sponsor.
I thinking along the lines of the football 'Emirates' stadium. (Arsenal isn't it?)

and that goes back to my original question of how they would make money throughout the year to pay back the costs of the overhaul? track days and lesser formulas would not even begin to cover the contractor wages. the only option is for the government to help out. if they can spend £3 billion on people running around in circles for 2 weeks then surely this is nothing!

Brilliant. That just about sums up the olympics for me too.

Whose side are you on! A grand prix track isn't just a circle, they have s-bends, chicanes, hairpins etc all which require supreme skill to go round at speed.
