Why not merge this thread with the 'Stories the WB can't make up' thread. :hehe:

But okay, children need education to know what's right and wrong...we realized this before this thread. The other option is to shut the internet down.

Not sure what this is about - sounds like parents that worry about thier kids online privacy (the gateway between virtual and real physical danger) are being advised by sagi to worry less about that and worry more about the dangers that existed before the internet?

You're not sure; but, have decided to misunderstand what I've posted?
Let me highlight what I believe you're responding to, ok?
... More parents should worry less about giving their children the right to online privacy and worry more about the potential for danger, if they aren't watchful.

...And that instead of parents using their methods of teaching their kids how to have common sense they should instead have 24 hour monitoring of their kids activites online...

Parenting has changed with the advent of the internet. Some parents haven't yet realized how invasive it can be.
Nor have they yet realized how pervasive some of the dangers are.

Which is NOT to say that parents need to become paranoid; but, they would do well to be aware.

...Like each parent probably did before the internet - 'listen kids, when an old guy in a raincoat offers you free sweets etc or asks for your address, then play along till you can kick him in the goonies, then in the head, then take his wallet and run to the nearest cops' ...

You're taking an out-dated stereotype to infuse a comical element to this discussion.
Pedophiles don't necessarily own raincoats, they don't necessarily offer sweets. From
what is reported many use pretty innocuous methods to lure children, especially online.
They portray themselves as being the same age, they build a trusting relationship with
a child and will even let the child be the one to issue the invitation to meet.

...and maybe since the internet the same parents are saying - listen kids, when you are discussng on line and the other person somehow always turns everything into sexual innuendos or suggestions then you can be sure he aint 10 yrs old and doesnt have both hands on his keyboards and so you should tell him/her that your long lost relative left you a goldmine in Africa and you just needs a paypal payment of 2k to retrieve this money...

That is one aspect/danger of what children find on line; but, just a reminder, not all
children are 10-years-old. There is a growing number of teenagers who are using the
social media to learn about umpalumpa and sexual innuendo. I'm sure you know that many
have been caught "sexting" pictures of themselves via their cells. The police are
calling that child pornography and are cracking down on it.

You may want to educate yourself: Prosecutor warns kids against sexting

And, before you think that's just a lot of scare mongering: Dutch man arrested in connection with suicide of Canadian teen Amanda Todd

...I mean its hardly rocket science teaching kids to spot online perverts, but a few isolated cases means we should all stop worrying about privacy - preventing their name and address getting know by potential perves

You've taken my comment out of context... again... that's really an annoying habit, you should try breaking!
It isn't as easy as you seem to think it is to teach children anything as they become teenagers and think they
have the answer to everything. Worse, they have the erroneous impression that they are immortal and that
bad things won't ever happen to them.

As for the privacy aspect, what I said was
... More parents should worry less about giving their children the right to online privacy and worry more about the potential for danger, if they aren't watchful.

 Ok the internet is dangerous and everyone should be aware of the risk. Thanks Sagi.

But what's the point of this thread? Its not like this forum is full of toddlers talking F1, so why open this here?

Sagi, can you please tell us in a single sentence what your motivation for this article is

To open up a discussion that is timely. I'm not expecting everyone to agree with me.
Nor do I intend to change anyone's mind about how they see this.

Adults to discuss things, besides F1. And, I purposefully opened this thread in the
"Off-Topic"/"Anything Else" section the forum.

Is that a problem?

It is just a topic to while away the off season. My reincarnation thread wasn't f1 related either

No I'm talking about the target market. Your thread was reg a debate which can be argued extensively till we go blue in the face with no conclusion and the 2015 season is upon us.

This thread has a very simple conclusion which everyone was aware of many years ago when the net started becoming a threat. Is this to make parents in this forum aware? Or for kids in this forum to not respond to WBs charms?:groucho: So I don't see what's there to discuss.

The world is NOT black and white. Everything is NOT good OR bad.
There are grey areas in between. This forum may not have toddlers
as members; but, some of us are parents. Some of us are aunts and
uncles. Some of us have family friends with children.

ALL of us were children, at some point in our lives. ALL of us are
using the internet, as we post.

Do you see the connection?

Look forward to more solutions being proposed in this thread.

Maybe there aren't any "one-size fits all" solutions that work for everyone.
Maybe it's just about sharing ideas and how to implement/modify them,
so that they work for you and yours.

But at least it made sense.

Now I'm off to create a thread on staying hydrated and eating less processed food.

How different is all that to teenagers who are easily lured by old but rich and famous pop stars? or priests, or teachers, or kids tv presenters

What about when impressionable kids go to the concert and are asked backstage by the roadie to meet popstar

what are you bringing to the table that any parent computer savvy enough to be on a website may have missed?
