I'm going to (sort of) go against the grain here. Whilst there is of course a downside, and the traditionalist within me doesn't truly like changes like this notion of double points at the last race, there ARE upsides.

Particularly, where at the moment in the last three or four races a number of teams 'switch off' and set their sights on the next year, perhaps the carrot on the end of the pole of a potentially huge haul of points might just keep one or two teams properly fighting until the end. Seasons like 2013, and in the past others such as 2002 & 2004 have been dead with a few races to go being all but meaningless save for the odd position in either championship, maybe putting the cat amongst the pigeons in this way might not be a bad thing. It certainly doesn't annoy me as much as other changes that have been suggested in the past.

"Had such a system been applied in previous seasons then Fernando Alonso would have beaten Vettel to the 2012 title while Felipe Massa would have been crowned World Champion in 2008 ahead of Lewis Hamilton"

FIVE F*CKING YEARS TOO F*CKING LATE :@

Yeah, like Alonso and Hamilton would have turned up for the last race(s) haven not read the rules

• Cost cap - I think this will be like the Australian election where Julia Gillard got back into power. Everyone screamed for it before the election, but as soon as it happened you couldn't find anyone who admitted to voting for her. The singularly most stupid move F1 has ever made IMO.
• Driver numbers - a harmless concept.
• New 5 second penalties - Another moronic idea which will inject even more rulings and judging into situations and events (racing incidents) that should just be let go.
• Points for the last race - yet another moronic idea. A knee-jerk reaction to Red Bull's dominance over the past 4 years. Red Bull should be commended for their achievement and the other teams need to knuckle down and do better.

really? it hasn't even been implemented or designed yet.

as for the permanent numbers, I think it's a great idea, especially in regards to making the sport more accessible to new fans. Hell, even as a fan of three years, it's hard to remember the numbers for drivers in the mid-lower level teams. most times it's impossible to ID the driver or car unless you can see the driver's helmet, and most newish fans will have no idea whose helmet is whose, especially with the recent trend of varying helmet designs. Maybe now that the numbers are more significant, they'll be more prominent on the car, like (gasp) NASCAR. But then that would take space away from sponsors, so I'm not getting my hopes up.

I'm with most of the others in thinking the double points for the last race is awful. now we know why Bahrain is last instead of Brazil.

Are there any other racing codes that alter points during the season? Remember when they only had your best 11 results in the late '80s. It seemed silly then and this seems silly now. The only things it's going to do is potentially rob somebody of a title that in all other years they would have won. And we all know who will benefit from this, because he's just lucky that way.

If the NHL can agree on and police both a salary cap and assessment of revenue streams well enough to appease both owners and players, anything is possible.

The NHL teams don't need to do R&D and manufacture a 100 million dollar hockey stick in order to win.

Irrelevant. Costs are costs and are recorded. Btw NHL teams do R+D ...it's called scouting. The costs will be different, but in today's world there is always a paper trail.

But NHL teams don't have side businesses where they could potentially hide costs.

I think double points for the last race is STUPID, it's another trick! Don't mind the permanent numbers though, I'm ok with that.

With you on both counts!!

For me, its a big yes. Its turning F1 into something cheap and suited to production car companies and what they want to race.

You're kidding right? Most NHL teams are side businesses. It's even easier to hide costs/revenues in a parent company, but the NHL figured that out. There is always a paper trail, if you want to follow it.

Double points for the last race makes a mockery of a chamionship! How can one race be more important than another? Utter stupidity!
Did Australia's Liberal party get power of the FIA also this year??

Maybe... just maybe it's not double points at the last race. It's half points in the races prior :hehe:

Once again the FIA miss the point. WE DONT WANT GIMMICKS!

So the driver who has fought tooth and nail for a small margin in a close fought season, or the team that has been the most consistent, the most reliable, the best strategist arrives at the last race and has its first mechanical issue of the year, or is hit by a back marker, or given a controversial drive through, the championship is lost. I don't want to see this, even if the driver and team involved is Vettel and Red bull.

And it tempts the ruthless team or driver into doing a Maldonado ( using car as weapon) or a Piquet( crashing to help team mate) if not as severe as that it certainly encourages a team to use the second driver to protect the first or to interfere with another teams driver.

But what do the views of loyal F1 fans matter if Betnie can encourage the casual viewer to hang around till the last race when poor policing of the sport and it's rules have allowed one team to sew the championship up early :banghead:
