I like this system we have now. it gives drivers a chance to get a banker in, then to really go for pole. As has been said, up to driver and team to find clear track, it's the same for all. Would like to see quali tyres used all through quali with all drivers being able to select what they start the race on. I found single driver on track quali really boring, to the extent that at Silverstone one year I thought " sod this, I'm not paying to come and watch this, I'll watch quali from the Jordan factory" they had big screens and I reckoned there'd be more atmosphere there and g it was free. Anyway, having booked a ticket for only race day I got an email from Silverstone saying I could have a three day pass for the same price. this was the start of them offering the three day cheap deals. so I think a whole lot of people had decided not to pay for tickets for quali and Silverstone was worried about empty grandstands for quali . That's my theory anyway.

They can't 'really' go for anything since those tyres are made of styrofoam. If they push it to the limit in Q3 and flatspot those tyres, they're screwed for the race even if they made a great lap in qualifying.

I miss the on the limit, kerb pounding laps of the late 90s and early 2000s...those were real 'qualifying laps'.

........it gives drivers a chance to get a banker in, then to really go for pole......

But these are meant to be the worlds best drivers? They shouldn't need a safety net of a banker lap - they should be able to push to the edge and get the best time, without going over the edge, when asked. If they cant, they shouldnt be in the sport.

1 Lap qualy is boring, if a guy gets held up/ spoiled by yellows in Q3 then that's their fault!

How is it THEIR fault if they have yellows...?

They have 10 minutes to do a time, if they all risk going out together these things happen. In the case of Japan, it was the drivers fault for not doing a banker lap and leaving their only shot to the last 5 seconds of Q3

The reason they sit in the pits is to save tyres - it's why the backmarkers are happy to do so many laps in Q1, qualifying tyres and separate race tyres seems the best solution to me, you'll get drivers doing a banker lap at the start of Q3 then in case of yellows.

I know what you mean about rarely seeing a driver doing a full lap though (watching the pole sitters lap retrospectively doesn't have the same excitement or tension).

Nope.

This does not account for mechanical failures, rain, red flag disruptions etc.

I like Q3 as it is - those who take risks and save tyres in Q1 and Q2 get 2 runs, those who dont either use all their tyres in Q3 or take the risk of 1 run at the end.

But thats life. They should just get on with it. They don't get a second chance in the race for any of the above, so why should quali be different.

The only thing wrong with qualifying today is the team saving tires for the race. Give everyone that makes it to Q3 a set of softs just to qualify and it's fixed. The reason we have issues today, like with Kimi spinning and screwing it up for so many is that they're all afraid to go out and put a banker lap in just to conserve tires. So a yellow, an accident or rain has the potential to ruin things, where a banker could be the different between starting on the 2nd or third row versus fourth and fifth row.

There was talk of Pirelli doing just that next year, introducing a set of qualifying tires, let's hope.

Pierlli have said they can make qualifying tyres, and are happy to do so, it's the FIA's decision.

that was ok but I prefer the present. too much chance of riff raff interfering with the result when everyones in the mix for the whole hour. The balance is about right now I think, drivers still need to find a space and get a clean lap, but it's more down to the driver that being lucky with a place on the track. Just need some decent bleedin tyres!!!
