Not really, they were signed for specific roles, worked out quite well for Ferrari in Rubens case, and it used to look quite good for Massa, now it looks like he's firmly behind Alonso and its up to Ferrari to make the call.

Youve moved the goalposts, so far that i dont even know what proposition we are debating over?

If Ferrari have the chance they prefer latin drivers, italian if they were any good :hehe:, mclaren favour british ones if its possible and mercedes favour german ones if its possible. But Ferrari are definitely more interested in it then the other two, and every team for that matter.

Can you imagine the fallout if Kobayashi sent his car up the inside of Alonso in the sister Ferrari  ?

If Kobayashi keeps up like this I feel he's a shoe in for the next open slot at a top team. It would be great for the sport too maybe bring back some interest from big Japanese companies to F1. Red or Silver or energy drinks I don't care put him in a pace setting car!

Personally I would rather see Kobayashi stay with Sauber and help make it a frontrunning team; with the Japanese being massive petrolheads; I can see Kobayashi bringing in a fair amount of Japanese sponsorship which can be used to bring in better designers, aerodynamacists (sp?) etc, I don't like the idea of him in Red as it'll mean I'll have to automatically hate him ;):P

Still disagree. If you look through the list of what drivers have won the championship for Ferrari. Only two were latin. Ascari, and Fangio. But that was so long ago it's irrelevant. I still see what you mean though, I'm sure Ferrari do prefer latin drivers. But certainly not as much as McLaren or Mercedes would. But sure, it's opinion. We don't know for sure what goes through the heads of team principals.

Generally teams today care much less about nationality. Unless your a mid-field team of course and that nationality brings plenty of cash. Indian, Russian, Venezuelan etc.

Simply a difference of OPINION yet someone keeps stating their opinion AS FACT and that is the main issue this thread is endureing. Maybe a lock is needed on this one aswell?

Nope; as long as things stay civil I'm leaving this one alone... from a forum rules point of view, presenting an opinion as fact isn't against the rules, do we believe all facts that are presented to us?

Actually I agree that I'd rather see Sauber move up the field with Koba and the front. The difference between 2011 and 2010 is pretty much all down to the fact they have money now.

Kobi has it in him to make Sauber a frontrunning team in seasons to come. But if Ferrari want to replace Massa in 2012, Kobi does look to be one of the better options without pinching a driver from Red Bull, McLaren or Mercedes.

IMO Kobayashi is the only option. Kubica's condition is still an unknown and the other driver haven't done enough to get in a top team. Would be funny if petrov starts to shine and I ends up next to Alonso

Everything is possible, Kobi is crazy! I don't know about Ferrari having a japanese driver, but, if he drives well...

Well to be fair to Ferrari, they're about the least bais team on the grid in terms of the nationality of their drivers. But no previous Japanese Ferrari driver comes to mind. Firsts are cool I say.

I think a lot of people are overlooking Perez this season too. He's on Ferrari's driver academy role. In my opinion he was about the best charging through field driver in GP2 I've ever seen. I think he once managed 4th from something like 22nd on the grid. Few too many mistakes at times, but its all about potential.

Disagree entirely with that, its just so glaringly not true, Ferrari prefer Latin drivers, and if they cant get them then something similiar like French. Ferrari have always prefered having a driver close to being italian as possible, but when the top drivers arent anywhere near that, they gotta settle for the best thing going, lauds, mansell etc.

Thats the only reason im sceptical of a kobyashi to top team move happening, there is a underlying prejudice against the quality of japanese drivers, very very slight and subtle, but its there. He needs to keep getting noticed, and hes doing it so far. Rather have him at Mclaren though

Ferrari prefer Latin drivers because Latin drivers very much speak Italian and at Ferrari Italian is the primary language. Alonso and Massa speak it fluently. Schumacher hardly knew 2 words so to say and Raikonen lets not go there. However this is not always the norm as Mansell spoke Italian and I think (I could be wrong) so did Irvine, But Mansell did because I have seen footage of him on Italian TV speaking Italian. However I prefer the best drivers rather than the Latin ones. Kubica (Who also speaks fluent Italian) is out for a season and he may be not as good when he makes his comeback. Kobayashi would be a great choice in my opionion as well because he has the potential to be the best. Most Japanese speak just Japanese (In Japan) but are fast learners. Italian sounds are simple like Japanese ones (as in simple) so he'll learn the Ferrari culture fast enough if Ferrari pick him.
