I am amazed that HFR was not the original 3D TBH. With the monocular vision in theory you would be down to 12 fps (per eye)

I suppose that would explain the problem with strobing of fast moving objects in existing 3D films.

With 3D each eye still gets the 24 frame updates per second with each frame flashed 3 times (alternating between left/right image) so there's 144 fps projected onto the screen, with HFR at 48 fps per eye each frame is flashed twice so there's 192 fps projected onto the screen.

The problem with 3D at lower frame rates is partly to do with the motion blur required to give the apperance of motion with lower fps.

So, anyone who's seen it, how was it?

I saw it twice. The first time we went there was something massively wrong with the projector. I wanted to see it in 3D HFR. Well ten minutes into the movie it was clear that whatever was wrong wasn't going to be fixed so I left, talked to the manager and got a complimentary pair of tickets as well as a pair of tickets to see the 2D version one that was playing an hour later.

Last week I went and finally caught it in HFR.

The movie itself didn't need to be 3 films long. It's not bad per se as it doesn't drag or anything but there is a little too much slapstick for my taste. By the nature of the story itself it's just not as EPIC as LOTR, but that's okay, it didn't have to be... but they try to make it anyway which I feels detracts from it. It's also liberaly sprinkled with things that didn't actually happen in the book but are meant to elbow you in the ribs as a reminder that this takes place before the LOTR and here's yet another character that is in LORT later one but that I need to either introduce them here or make it obvious how they're going to 'turn' in LOTR.

It you want good entertainment for the masses and no need to know anything of the book, then it delivers, but for the die hard fans, it feels like a new pair of shoes that you love how they looks but they don't quite fit just right yet.

The HFR is recommended, it does have a few minutes of adjustment but I quite frankly forgot about it quickly and just enjoyed the level of detail which is surreal in it's reality, in a way it feels. The difference gap is akin to watching a 480P DVD and then watching a 720P HD video.
