Perhaps they can fix their problems by the first race but with such little track time with the new car on new tyres it'd be an incredible feat if they did get everything sorted 100%. It probably isn't helping themconcentrate on their aero issues if the drivers aren't liking the Pirellis much either (i have read that certainly Hamilton doesn't seem to), dividing focus is a waste of precious testing time especially when some other teams seem to be so far along their programmes. Also, i don't think it's helped that they have been spending time changing their exhaust configs mid-test.
I have no doubt they can fix it long term even if it's a fundamental aero problem (see '09, '04 etc), even if it proves that this sidepod design wasn't the way to go after all and they have to do a complete rethink mid-season. However by then they might be so far behind Red Bull and Ferrari that their only realistic goals are to just go for odd wins, or hope for another freak championship fight might allow them to sneak in. I believe the exhausts and sidepods are their current problem areas because the drivers have been saying the car simply lacks downforce, and this season generating downforce will revolve around maximising the diffuser and beam wing (the lower part of the rear wing) effectiveness.
It's all about mileage in these early stages to gain data and reliability, and from there you can move on with upgrades because you know where to go with developments. The fundamental problem for McLaren is that they don't have this mileage yet.
Rising number one of Formula 1, Juan - Juan, one wonders should Juan only win one Formula 1 one year, would Juan have won that one in round one, Juan??
