The USA have given to the world most of the advances gotten in the last one hundred years. That’s much I guess. They’ve also given bad things, like consumers society and others, but undeniably they have had an enormous impact in the whole world, because they’re ruling it. You like it or not.

I'll say this; the last major culture to disappear because they refused to change and adapt was the Roman Empire; that means the USA has approx 250 years left! :yikes:

You're comparing American culture to that of the Romans? c'mon now

Why not; Rome thought they were invincible and that arrogance ultimately cost them

You can compare power wise maybe but culture wise... You can't compare to that of Rome, who's culture still lives on in many ways in the western world today.

Well, this is becoming more and more debatable - it's sometimes disgusting how countries have become Americanized these days :banghead:

Wait till China becomes Americanized.

It's difficult to say what an empire's influence is during the time of that empire, I agree the Romans have had a one of the most influential civilizations, but then again they were influenced by the Greeks. America has given the world, the internet, and Hollywood, those are likely to stick around for some time. :D

i swear we gave the world the internet(edit, turns out the world wide web in which we are currently talking on, is british, internet in its basic form is american)....and i cant believe you chose Hollywood as one of the things to flagship what America has given the world lol  Did you guys not invent the first car, or was that Germany?, i need to do some research honestly.....

HAHA! I'm an engineer so I said the internet not the web purposely, actually the internet is means while the web is the content like email or file transfer or any such other protocol. Although the hypertext and hypertext markup language (HTML) did come about from research and database sharing being done in Europe and is the essence of the Web the internet itself has its roots in arpanet which was wholly American and primarily used by the defense department.

And I said Hollywood in a bit of sarcasm, but then again, you can go into some of the most remote locations on this planet and find evidence of Americanization through film, music and television and now with with web sites like youtube and facebook. The influence is very much there. It may not be as grandiose as the remnants in our world of the Roman empire but it's influenced the world none the less, probably more widely than the Roman empire ever did, and will likely continue to do so for a long time.

EDIT: I came across this map today. It's ARPANET a la 1972... This was the entire internet!

Jack, so you are saying that it's OK to go to war over control of oil? The oil resides on Iraqi and Iranian land; what gives America or any other country the right to invade other countries because they have oil reserves; those countries have the right to sell or refuse sale to anyone or any nation, but that reckoning, the US is a law until itself!

And what right did the Queen have to control Hong Kong and for so long??? or India and every Brittish colonie known to man

The acquisition of Hong Kong was typical of the way in which western countries seized colonies between about 1840 and 1890. In 1839 China stopped the importation by the East India Company of opium, which China complained was having a debilitating effect upon its people. When British and American ships defied the ban, Chinese officials publicly destroyed 20,000 cases of the drug. Faced with the collapse of its Far Eastern operations (for without the opium trade it was not financially viable), the East India Company persuaded the British government, then led by Lord Palmerston, to declare war on China. As a result of the Opium War, Britain gained Hong Kong island. Kowloon was added to the colony after a second Opium War (1856–58) and more mainland territory was taken in 1898.

So whats new?? A country invades another because of peace??
Human kind will kill go to war for money/women and drugs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nowadays it isn’t just a matter of becoming richer. The Economy is global and stands in a delicate equilibrium, any main issue related with oil would produce a chain reaction that would affect millions of innocent people around the world. That includes us.
Oil producers are selling at fair prices and most of them are in fact very rich countries. Nobody is stealing them.
Other thing is the way in what the US sometimes carries their external affairs. For example, the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait could have been easily avoided. But the US ambassador, in her last interview with Saddam Hussein before the invasion, said to him that the US wouldn’t intervene in case of a conflict with Kuwait. She was almost inviting him to do it.
If you don’t believe me I can post the transcription of the whole interview.

Sorry, no first-hand experience: wrong country and wrong era.
