So I opted to start on the prime tyres in Australia and go for a long opening stint. Bad idea.

I always go for the long first stints on the prime. Works like a charm.

Are you using custom car setups?

It's all to do with the car setup. The skill levels only change the assists, the laptimes from the ai seem to stay the same. Could be wrong, but I haven't seen any difference in laptimes between Expert and Hard.

Just TC on medium, since I'm using a pad.

To clarify, I have a setup that can get me in to the high 1:37s/low 1:38s but it's very unstable-feeling and leads to a lot of spinning out.

It's the top one there and to be honest, whilst it's usable for one well-strung-together lap, it's hard to be consistent with it.

I've recently weaned myself off Automatic gears. Still use the racing line for corners so I can get the breaking points right.

Ow and traction control is always on full. Don't know how you have the patience for it even on medium with a control pad.
