James Allen's Singapore blog
Friday, 26 September 2008 00:00

We’ve had our first session here in Singapore and there was plenty of spectacular action and a few near-misses out on the track as the drivers get used to it.

At the end, Lewis Hamilton very nearly hit Giancarlo Fisichella who had spun in one of the blind corners and was across the track.

Lewis was fastest, by a few hundredths from Felipe Massa with Kimi Raikkonen in third.

Heikki Kovalainen had a huge moment at the final corner, as did Sebastian Vettel. Luckily for both there is plenty of run-off area there.

Mark Webber hit the wall on the outside of the corner which passes under the grandstands early on, so Red Bull lost a lot of set-up time, which is not ideal on a new track.

It’s very dusty out there, as you’d expect, but also very bumpy and the cars look very lively.

Even if we don’t get much overtaking I think we will have an eventful race on Sunday with a high chance of a safety car because someone will go into the wall at some point.

The controversial chicane where the oversized Tic-Tac kerbs had to be removed is not in fact a chicane; the cars go straight through it and then turn left.

It’s a road-narrowing device to ensure that the cars will be in single file for the Anderson bridge.

The problem with this is that in the race it will spread the field out massively, so overtaking will be made more difficult and it will mean that qualifying at the front is absolutely critical – because if you are running around in fifth place in the opening laps, as Kimi Raikkonen has a few times lately, you will be 20 seconds behind the leader by the time of the first pit stops and totally out of it.

Last night we were all woken up by what sounded like a giant bomb going off. It was a thunderstorm, which lasted a few hours, with torrential rain.

If that happens on Sunday there is no way they could start the race.

The track is not as bright as I’d expected it to be and the cars are not as illuminated as you’ll be expecting when you see them on TV. It’s 8.45pm here now and I’m off for lunch…weird.

So who watched practice? I did and wow that whole arena and it's surroundings are a sight to behold but man is that track slippery or what!
Qualifying should be quite thrilling.

I didn't watch the practice, for it's usually very stuttery and I'm doing some university work, but from the times it seems it's going to be McLaren versus Ferrari for the win, borrowing the usual racing incidents, like safety cars, poor weather (which is likely), technical failures etc. Renault and Williams look good, BMW look pretty smart as well, but the Toyotas don't look as strong as they have been recently, nor do Red Bull and Toro Rosso look particularly fast.

The pitlane is sufficiently narrow, in my view, to hand out penalties if we see any repeats of what happened in, say, Valencia.

I'm pretty sure that, with Super Aguri no longer competing, any team or driver would be able to take the fine without considering it anything more than losing a pound coin.

In Valencia, you could just about have two cars going side-by-side. At this venue, there is no chance of that, so a drive-through penalty bare minimum should be dished out this weekend. The FIA should make that clear to the teams in the pre-race briefing.

hahahhaah! oh! men.... AKR and Ferrarista's team is NOT in good shape...... Mc Laren is on TOP. No matter what you two comments to Hammy, still everybody knows and even Bob Varsha and the rest from Speed Channel agree that Ferrari is still not good over Mc Laren drivers. Ferrarista, you and your team need my good luck. I'm not Hammy fan but, atleast I can accept to my self who is No.1 F1 driver as of now! By the way, What the heck is Ferrari lawyer doing in the Court of Appeal of SPA drama anyways???? Commented by Speed Channel host David Cobbs

First off it's 'McLaren' not 'Mc Laren' and secondly you just seem to be wanting to start sh!t and I will not let this thread take a turn for the worse, get my drift  ?
