- 30 Jul 13, 13:17#367653I find myself frustrated at the moment, looking at the calibre of the drivers currently available to F1 teams. On the sidelines we have:
Jaime Alguersuari
Heikki Kovalainen
Kamui Kobayashi
Timo Glock
All of these would be a great addition to some teams, yet we have drivers like Chilton, Pic, van der Garde and Gutiérrez* currently racing (I could also say Maldonado, but at least he has the occasional moment), and very nearly had Razia but for his sponsorship failure (thankfully); next year we're looking at Sirotkin coming in with very little experience and no real achievements. Meanwhile, despite their good results, I don't expect to see the likes of James Calado, Jon Lancaster, Mitch Evans, Aano Vainio, Tio Ellinas or Conor Daly make it to F1 in the coming years. Nasr might, especially if he beats the waste of space Coletti to the title this year, but I worry that even that would be with the likes of Caterham or Marussia. I think the three with the biggest chance, at the moment, are Kevin Magnussen (due to the McLaren backing) and the Red Bull juniors António Félix da Costa and Carlos Sainz Jr. and of those, I only think Magnussen (who is really good) really deserves that.
* I think Gutiérrez is ultimately good enough for F1, but was promoted too early and this was mainly a result of the sponsorship money that he brings. He and Calado were my two to watch in GP2 last year, and I think Calado has benefited more from another season there than Gutiérrez has from struggling with Sauber this year.
Who knows, maybe I'm just a bit harsh on these youngsters, but it certainly seems to me that the future does not look good for young talent in single-seater racing. Well, unless Formula E really takes off, in which case they might stand a chance...
