Well 2 races so far and Sergio has matched his team mate. 2 points each. They are very closely matched, there is nothing in it at all.
#351825
Perez is off the mark. :)

The points would've been substantial if Button had finished though.

I recall people making the same argument about Lewis when he was over there.

Button retiring helped hugely.

Oh Button had bad luck? so did Sergio, the team screwed his Q3 lasttime, who knows how high he would have come. Buttons pit error is likely partly his own fault.

Nope these things even themselves out, Perez has come into Buttons team and matched him already

...Buttons pit error is likely partly his own fault.....

Id love to see you explain this with logic....

Thats simple, the guy on the jack was not ready, he knew he was not ready, Button drives the car no one else, Button drove off too early full stop.

If you look at the last race, even Brundle commented that Button was moving off noticeably early

Whitmarsh said he reacted too quickly

But surely Button only drives off when he is released. Are you saying he jumped the lights...?

edit: Ok, I can see what you are saying now. Youve got a point, he could of done.

Ive just re-watched the pit on iPlayer, and unfortunately they show it from the front, so you cant see the lights. But you can see that Button is dropped to the floor. His anti-stall kicks in, he jolts, and then he drives off. But the wheel guy still has his gun on the wheel - so you've got to assume the Red-light was on.

The reason I didn't think he could of been to blame was, I thought in my head that the jack guy didn't lower the car until all the wheel men are done. But obviously this would slow down the pitstop, so it all kind of happens at once....

I don't think that's accurate:

Martin Whitmarsh, team principal
"After having finished only ninth and 11th last weekend in Melbourne, today in Sepang we saw clear evidence that all the hard work we've been doing over the past week has resulted in some significant gains in terms of car development. Obviously, however, we're very disappointed that Jenson lost a hard-earned and well-deserved fifth place, perhaps even third or fourth, as a consequence of a pitstop problem caused by a wheel-gun issue. Jenson did absolutely nothing wrong and reacted correctly to the green light, by the way. Checo, too, put in a solid and plucky performance all weekend, earning his first points for Vodafone McLaren Mercedes this afternoon, and recorded fastest lap at the very end of the race. Clearly, therefore, although as I say we're very disappointed for Jenson, the truth is that he could and should have finished at least fifth - and, although by our own high standards that's not remotely good enough, it plainly shows that we're going in the right direction from a car-development point of view."

Did he contradict himself? He seems to stress this point here, so maybe cookinflats source was correct but Whitmarsh corrected himself here.

It's sad to see the McLaren team principal living in the same daydream as Button though....3rd or 4th? Dream on...put your damn wheel gun where your mouth is next time and prove it.

Malaysian GP race quotes: McLaren

Sergio Perez - 9th: "This afternoon my engineers sorted out a very good race strategy that enabled me to pass the cars immediately in front of me early on – so thank you and well done for that, guys.

"Unfortunately, towards the end of the race, my tyres began to degrade a bit too much, especially my front left, and we therefore felt it would be too risky to try to drive to the finish on that set.

"Consequently, we had no real option other than to make an extra pitstop, which caused me to lose position. I still ended up ninth, which is two places better than I finished in Melbourne last weekend, so I think it's fair to say that we can see that progress is being made.

"In Shanghai in two weeks' time let's hope that that upward trend continues."

Jenson Button – 17th: "We drove a good race today. Strategy-wise, we did everything right. We pitted on the correct laps and looked after the tyres exactly as we should have done.

"We'd have finished fifth but for the problem in the pitstop – maybe we'd even have been in the battle for third and fourth. It's very disappointing that we weren't able to demonstrate that, of course.

"Even at the end we had a chance of scoring a point, but unfortunately I was struggling with my front left [tyre] by that stage. It kept locking up, and it was producing such a bad vibration that I think the guys were worried that it might damage the front left suspension if I carried on.

"However, as I say, apart from the pitstop problem, I think we did a pretty good job. We've made improvements over the past week, and the result of those improvements was that we were more competitive here in Malaysia than we were in Australia last weekend, so there are definitely positives that we can take away with us.

"Hopefully, in China in two weeks' time, we can continue that steady improvement and score a few more points."

Martin Whitmarsh – Team principal: "After having finished only ninth and 11th last weekend in Melbourne, today in Sepang we saw clear evidence that all the hard work we've been doing over the past week has resulted in some significant gains in terms of car development.

"Obviously, however, we're very disappointed that Jenson lost a hard-earned and well-deserved fifth place, perhaps even third or fourth, as a consequence of a pitstop problem caused by a wheel-gun issue. Jenson did absolutely nothing wrong and reacted correctly to the green light, by the way.

Straight from the horses mouth.

Yes Andrew we've seen what MW said. We've already quoted him above. Doesnt mean we cant debate it.

And, in this instance, I would say the horse is Button.

I didn't see thus why I posted it. I would suggest thaty Whitmarsh's opinion on the matter is just as valid and accurate as Buttons. But hey, if you want to believe a madcap theory go ahead.

I didnt say I believed it. Im discussing it to try to draw an opionion. I started off the conversation thinking it could no-way be Buttons fault. Someone gave me a counter-theory, which made think there is the possibility of Jeson taking some blame. Cookin's theory is far from 'madcapped'.

You see, this is what is meant to happen in discussions Andrew - You need to be open to changing your mind when new evidence supports it, and not just stick your head in the sand and blindly stick to your own initial conclusions.
