since when is basketball only watched in 1 country?? have you heard about the dream team for the olympics? lots of countries not only watch basketball, but also play it competitively.

just because the nba is an american league doesnt mean the sport itslef is solely american. its the same case with the bundesliga, premiere league, mls, italian league, and so on.... the NBA is simply a league, it is not "the sport of basketball".

This always happens, someone (not their fault at all) takes something too literally and it spirals off.

Nobody is literally saying basketball is only played in one country. But its majority audience can be attributed to one nation of about 250 odd. That alone qualifies it as a very one-country sport.

It also whether meant or not comes across so arrogant when its our US cousins that say MJ is the greatest athlete, when only one nation really has a chance at producing the greatest ever basketball player. Football (soccer) is Europes, South Americas, and Africas sport. Dominated. Boxing is played to a proffesional level by almost every semi-developed country in the entire world, and there are current world champions from about 18 countries let alone competitors!

Of course its not MJ's fault its a US sport, but i still dont think he qualifies for the best athlete ever.

A US sport? Only one nation has a chance in producing great players???? WHY?? There are no poor kids where you live and can only afford a 10$ basketball?

You still expect to be taken seriously? :wavey:

hmmm i dont know. The NBA's majority audience is usa, but the rest of the world has its own audience and its own leagues.

How many boxing fights are on in the world each day... do you get to watch them? do you care? just because something is out of your market/target or whatever... doesnt mean its not being played, watched etc

well... what you call the US audience considers MJ as such.... because they're the ones who've watched him the most? Does that mean he isn't? couldnt this be a case of a 'missed' or 'misunderstood' talent?

Anyone can produce great basket ballers..... not everyone will reach the nba and its audience... but they are out there. same goes for every sport. its very difficult to name a single greatest athlete....... perhaps a triathlon or super olympic guy...... but not many people have exposure, or get to watch them on a regular basis... bummer.

This always happens, someone (not their fault at all) takes something too literally and it spirals off.

welcome to internet?

Yeah but theres a saying over here called "cream of the crop" when the crop are too few, the cream dont rise. Thats why theres no British, French whatever Basketball players, cause the "scene" is too small and unpopular over here.

Look at India, most populated Cricket loving country, and they dominate at it, cause theye got masses of people who play it each and every day to form a team from.

Notice when you have an event that incorporates many sports, prime example olympics, the countries that always finish top 3 in medal count?

China
Usa
Russia
(irrelevant but at Beijing 2008 UK came fourth beating auld enemies France and Germany!)

Why, cause theyve all got hundreds of millions of people and plenty of sports to focus on. So naturally they end up getting most medals. More talent to choose from.

Why do you think Russia Canada and the US are the best three at ice hockey? Cause theyre the only ones that really play it, could lump Finland in there too.

What this all comes back to, is that Michael Jordan dominated a sport, where he was technically the best in the world. But the rest of the world.....it didnt really care.....

same countries that can get medals in basketball... adding or substituting one with a similar choice.

hmmm but that's compatible with what almost everyone is saying: just because the world didn't care; does it mean Jordan wasn't (the greatest)?
#252456
I dunno how you'd judge so (perhaps Laureus has ideas?), but I think our nominations would be subject to each of our knowledge and interests respectively...with or without research - hence I think its hard to mow down another person's opinion....unless you nominate Vettel! :hehe:

There was a mention of some Darts champion who won 15 or so titles.....to followers, he'd be a legend. To others, he wouldn't be any different to Joe Schmo.

Does an athelete have to do Atheletics?

No and i said that technically he was the best in the world, but it doesnt take away the fact it was only EVER going to be an american wasnt it?

Boxing is not only a real sport of blood sweat and tears, Success is 99 percent down to yourself, rather then a team, and Muhammed Ali not only reolutionized boxing, but he was a cultural icon for his outstanding views and criticisms of the racist war mongering nature of the 60's US government.

Lance Armstrong also takes part in a sport where loads of countries have cycling as a popular sport, he also fought cancer whlst doing do, and won 7 titles in a sport that i think is by far the most physically demanding of anything.

Theres more to being the best athlete ever then the impact you had on the playing field if you ask me. Other then secure himself millions of pounds, i dont know what makes MJ so special outside of his ability at basketball?

I'm not sure if that response was directed to me or not but I'll assume it was, my apoligies if I've got the wrong end of the stick.

I didn't say that it was only played in America, I said people that live "somewhere like the USA" which obviously has a massive basketball following probably know more about Michael Jordan than people from a country like Britain, which really doesn't have a big basketball scene. But to be honest, for those of us that don't follow basketball, the NBA is probably the only league they've ever heard of so the connotation between the USA and basketball is obvious.

dont worry, i dont think it was directed at you, or anyone in particular. Its just a general opinion of how some sports even if the biggest interest is in 1 nation, that doesnt mean it is a 1 nation sport. But even if it were a 1 nation sport or an unpopular sport, would that count a specific athlete out of the greatest athlete? i dont think so. just because someone isnt noticed in this or what country doesnt mean he could not be the greatest. that goes for everyone.

And also.... the same thing many pointed out, its normal that people who get more exposed to a certain sport or athlete are going to be biased to them.... that's how it goes, not much anyone can do about it.
