Well, it may well be a good thing, and, often the simplest explanation ends out being the right one. Martin W is a clever guy, and perhaps he's decided that they gave it a shot, if the idea worked they would have been ahead of the pack. It didn't, so they will go the more conventional route. Which probably means they will in fact be a second or so faster. That would put them on pace with the leaders and then they'd be in the hunt.

yup. they might even be able to continue 'research' on their funky exhaust, while in the meantime they can run the tried and tested Ferrari and RB type..... not bad idea, except they are now starting from almost sq.1 while everyone else quite ahead in understanding/improving it.
