Jenson Button believes McLaren was in good shape to challenge for third place when he was force to retire from the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Having started the weekend in crisis, McLaren showed good improvement on Saturday morning to be more competitive in dry conditions and Button was running fifth for much of the race. Having led before his third pit stop, Button then had to stop in the pit lane as his front right tyre was fitted incorrectly, and he believes he would have been in the mix for third place but for that mistake.

"It was a good race, I think we did everything right; called the conditions correctly and pitted on the correct laps and looked after the tyres as we should," Button said. "We would have only had to have done three stops instead of four which would have made it interesting with the Mercedes I think, but there you go.

"It is what it is; we had a problem in the pit stop. Once you've turned the car off, pushed the car back and changed a wheel you're never going to get a result. We had a chance of getting a point in the end but I was struggling with the front left, kept locking up and I had such a bad vibration I think they were worried about the front left suspension because of the locking so they called me in."

Button's team-mate Sergio Perez brought home two points in ninth place after a very late pit stop as he failed to complete the strategy Button was targeting. Perez said that explained his fastest lap, but if the team had timed his third stop better he could have held on to eighth place.

"We stopped with two laps to go and we managed to put in a good lap," Perez said. "It's a shame, pretty much we lost a position; we should have finished eighth but we didn't stop at the right time. Anyway it's good points for the team and we have to keep improving. We are going in the right direction so hopefully for Shanghai we can be better."

So many f**king dreamers in the Msian GP. Must've been the local food, the amount of spice in them might be too much for a few europeans. This guy had the Redbulls and Mercedes breathing down his neck with all of them having to do just 1 stop (Lewis owns him just before his pitstop) and he thinks he could've got THIRD?

Next time Lewis should just crash out on the 1st lap in Shanghai and declare he could've lapped the field if he was still racing.

Hmm. I don't know about 3rd, but 5th place was surely there for the taking.

With both Merc's having to hold station and one going slow it would have been a possibility if Button had kept close enough to them before they had to slow down. I think Alonso would have been a more certain bet for 3rd than Button.

5th is a big step up from Melbourne though. What a bummer the front right didn't go on :(

Is it a conspiracy against Button?

The real bummer is Sam Michael still having a job at McLaren.

I agree. And despite my views on Button he didnt deserve that. He drove well today and the pit stop was a cruel blow.

Yes, this time the tyre didn't have the grip on the axle.

3rd? Hahaha, what a joker

First of all he is assuming that he can finish the race without an extra pitstop, so no pushing at all or just cruising and collecting. Funny though that Perez had to make an extra pit stop cos his tyres were done. How was Button going to gain all that time and overtake Rosberg (assuming Merc would have unleashed him) or even gain on Lewis without doing his tyres.

He is really losing it. Also despite what Whitmarsh says, the pitstop error was Button taking off too quickly, unless there is proof the lights changed

Shame to see McLaren duking with Torro Rossos and Saubers despite having a car that lead the race and was capable of grabbing the fastest lap albeit at the end blah blah blah. The car cannot have been changed that much in the last week, second rate drivers will bring second rate results. We will see flashes of how good the car is but the results will somehow just be mediocre race after race

Once in a while Button will drive to his potential and do really well, but mostly he wont and we will here that the car is suddenly terrible, no grip, no balance etc etc. lets hope the team stop falling for it and wasting valuable time that could be put towards 2014

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Perez said he had a slow puncture and therefore needed to change tires in the penultimate lap.

You're quite correct about Perez having a slow puncture. I read something along those lines earlier. I'll see if I can find a link.

I haven't read what Whitmarsh said about the pitstop. What did he say? I couldn't help feeling sorry for Button( god damn I was angry with myself for that! :hehe: ) I figured it was either button taking off toosoon or the lollipop man signalling too soon. The wheel man knew that wheel wasn't on and hadnt signalled to go. He was signalling there was a problem.

I let off a snicker when they showed Button taking off like a boss and then slowing to a standstill 10 metres down the road. Thought it was an electronic glitch but then saw the tyre and was like "McLaren-esque pitstop as usual".
