Your right Jason 2.5yr's is enough time to have a well informed opinion about the US so I apologize for that comment as it was uncalled for. One thing I must pointout about this topic is it seems to be going fairly well with alot more great opinions and debate and much less bickering, well done to all of us  .

My opinion is abit biased simply because I'm a police officer and carry a gun daily so please excuse me if I seem out of line or defensive sometimes :) . I'll try to not let it cloud any rational opinions.

I'll say this; the last major culture to disappear because they refused to change and adapt was the Roman Empire; that means the USA has approx 250 years left! :yikes:

You're comparing American culture to that of the Romans? c'mon now

Why not; Rome thought they were invincible and that arrogance ultimately cost them

You can compare power wise maybe but culture wise... You can't compare to that of Rome, who's culture still lives on in many ways in the western world today.

Well, this is becoming more and more debatable - it's sometimes disgusting how countries have become Americanized these days :banghead:

Wait till China becomes Americanized.

It's difficult to say what an empire's influence is during the time of that empire, I agree the Romans have had a one of the most influential civilizations, but then again they were influenced by the Greeks. America has given the world, the internet, and Hollywood, those are likely to stick around for some time. :D

Apology accepted, it is nice to have decent debate on this here forum, I think all comments in here are equally valid, a different perspective is good; it shows the flaws in the United States and cultures around the world, when you live in that society day in, day out, it's easy to lose objectivity sometimes.

I don't want guns banned, I have no issue with people having guns, I just want better control over who can buy guns, frankly the system now is a joke in some states, just show a drivers licence and walk away with a firearm, hardly an effective vetting system is it?

WB; I think everything said in this thread is all relative to the original subject!

Sorry mate, it'll be the other way around: the Chinesization of America is already in full bloom and it's going to get worse.

I agree Jason there needs to be an overhauling of the requirements needed to purchase a firearm. A person with a felony or a domestic/family violence conviction cannot buy one but an 18yr old (with no record) can walk into the local gun dealer and buy a long gun ie a rifle or shotgun but you must be 21yr's of age to buy a pistol with none of the convictions I listed, atleast here in Texas. Yet we must all realize that guns can easily be purchased black market so how to eliminate that problem is a major issue and one that may never be fully eliminated.

I'm pretty sure some are working on revamping the system but you know how slow these things can be goverment wise. Police officers would like nothing more than changes made so I think we agree with 99% of the publics angst.

I'm sorry, when I said Americanization, I meant to write consumerism. :) and that only works in one direction.

...anyway, we've been eating Chinese food longer than the Chinese have been able to to buy a mikey D's burger.

I think Rome and the US are comparable. Rome has been deeply studied. In fact it served as a model in many areas for the British Empire. As Burn says they took a lot from the Greeks, but definitely they gave to the world an alphabet, a language, a system of justice and a whole culture. The reason of their rise and fall has been objet of study and I believe it still is. I can’t imagine how many historians and analysts the US Administration has for these questions, but undoubtedly many.
The reason of its fall wasn’t undoubtedly its arrogance, but their decadence, because of their accommodative uses, their style of life focused much more on pleasure than in fight and discipline, their corruption and ultimately their lost of vigor and strength.
I believe the US Empire Administration is very conscious of that and probably it’s one of the reasons for having a war from time to time. They have the only true army and navy of the world and they want things continuing being like that.
About oil, most of it is in Arab countries and they have the right to do whatever they want with it, but if you think about the consequences of an oil embargo for the world economy, you should understand why they US has the responsibility of keeping the oil supply open. I’m not talking about rich people becoming less rich, but about a devastating economical depression impoverishing people to the point of starving and die in the cold winters, a true agony for millions of families around the world. I´m saying that the US has not only the right, but the obligation to keeps the oil supply flowing.
I also believe that the US is closely studying the rise of China that would become a huge economic power, the biggest the world has seen. The US won’t allow China in any case to become more powerful than them. It would be an enormous lack of responsibility from the US Administration to allow that.
We don’t live in an ideal world; any action has its consequences.
I’m sorry for being so off topic, but I find it interesting enough for being discussed.

Seriously man top post, takes a brave un' even on a internet forum to take a step back and look at things without shouting off, i personally didnt/dont and will never have a problem with anyone who defends the use of guns, as i have stated before it has its upsides, just will also never believe in keeping them allowed , what im not allowed is a vote on it as a non-us citizen, my opinion counts almost as much.

Thought we'd lost you for a while there though Tex, posts were crazy ignorant!

Worse? China have the perfect mix of keeping its citizens (for the most part, im not naive enough to think there isnt supression of some) under control and allowing them freedom, they have the strictness of a communist party, and the economy of a super capitalist country, their food is the worlds best, andwhen other countrys go bankrupt, they have enough to throw their pocket change at them and tell them its their treat. If anything Chinesization is a good thing, its like the people in the UK who say muslims are outbreeding us, who cares? i dont care much for whitey, times change, if its the chinese people and islamic religion set to rule the world let em have it.
