The 2009 Formula One Drivers' Championship will be decided by a medals system instead of points.

F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone announced on Wednesday that race winners will from next year be awarded medals with the Championship settled according to who has the highest number.

Gold, silver and bronze medals would be given to the top three finishers and the driver who won most races would be crowned World Champion.

Ecclestone says the system should be approved by motorsport world governing body, the FIA, before the end of year.

"It's going to happen," Ecclestone is quoted by Associated Press. "All the teams are happy. The reason this happens is that I get fed up with people talking about no overtaking.

"The reason there's no overtaking is nothing to do with the circuit or the people involved, it's to do with the drivers not needing to overtake.

"If you are in the lead and I'm second, I'm not going to take a chance and risk falling off the road or doing something silly to get two more points. If I need to do it to win a gold medal, because the most medals win the World Championship, I'm going to do that. I will overtake you."

Ferrari's Felipe Massa would have won this year's title under the proposed system as he won one more race than 2008 Champion Lewis Hamilton.

"This year, we saw on a number of occasions Lewis not overtaking Massa for that reason," Ecclestone added. "If he'd driven for me, tried it and made a mistake, I would have complained. It's just not on that someone can win the World Championship without winning a race."

The man just doesn't know what he's talking about. The problem is the drivers, my bottom it is.
Clearly Massa never pushed for a win in Hungary, and clearly Alonso never pushed for the win in Fuji, and clearly Lewis never pushed for the win in Germany. Bernie doesn't seem to understand that in 2008, it was the greatest year of all time. So why, does the points system thats proved successful in every single category of motor racing, need changed.

I say definite protest. This is a public sport. The entire sport hinges on us, the viewers, so if he goes against our views, something seriously needs done.

I don't understand what your saying there?

Massa did a great move on Hamilton in Hungary

Alonso Won in Fuji and Lewis did two fantastic over takes in Germany for the win?

Your right about the last point tho it isn't broke so it don't need fixing

I can not understand the logic behind the medal system at all. Didn't BE want the change of points from the top 6 to the top 8 because people further down the field had nothing to fight for? no he has gone the other way and said only the top 3 gets points/medals :-s

What a complete pile of doggy doo doo.

Especially as they think that next year the field spread will be a lot bigger than this year. Hardly an incentive for someone who is driving a car that is 2 seconds a lap of the pace to be bothered to get into the car.

How about a binary point system

1st 128
2nd 64
3rd 32
4th 16
5th 8
6th 4
7th 2
8th 1

I'm fine with a binary point system.

It would actually do what Bernie thinks medals will do.

But still, as time goes on, I have a bigger urge to punch Bernie in the face.

This idea is almost as bad the standard engine idea. If this medal system comes in then I will seriously re-consider watching F1 altogether it will NOT improve overtaking because the lower teams in 15th place or similar won't even bother because it would be very unlikely for them to get in the top 3.

Also the title fights will just be ridiculous because you could get someone finishing in second place at every race and winning 1 race and under the current system they would easily be world champion but if the new system came into effect then you could get someone not finishing at most races but they might get a few more wins and they could be world champion.
