Alonso wants Renault stay
Eurosport - Tue, 16 Sep 15:32:00 2008

Fernando Alonso has insisted that remaining at Renault is his first choice as speculation builds that he is in talks over a move to BMW Sauber for 2009.

Drivers' standings
Alonso, who became a double world champion with Renault before a year at McLaren and subsequent return to the French squad for 2008, had been linked with a move to Ferrari.

However Finnish driver Kimi Raikkonen, the reigning world champion, signed a contract until 2010 with the Scuderia.

"I am trying to find the best place that I can be," Alonso told Cadena Ser. "I know all the people here and that things can go well: they are preparing the new car but I have not seen much of it.

"All the teams are very optimistic about next year. But Renault have given me two championship cars and so it is easier to believe what they tell me over the others."

With regards to missing out on a move to Italian team Ferrari, Alonso said there was plenty of time to come.

"I am 27 and have many more laps to do," he added. "If I race in F1 for another eight or 10 years, perhaps one day I will again have the opportunity to go there."

He said that he was not thinking too much about his future with only four races to go in the year.

"For now I have to try to get back to winning as soon as possible, rather than think about 2010 or 2011," he said.

The Spaniard lies seventh in the drivers' championship with 28 points, but stands little chance of overhauling McLaren's Heikki Kovalainen (51) above him could even drop down the pecking order as a chasing pack lies only a few points back.

If he stays @ Renault, he would win even more respect.
It's an incredible challenge to lift Renault back to the old level ('05-'06').

Bu, he and Kubica would form a hell of a team ...

I get the feeling that Alonse doesnt have the patience to rebuild a team and is looking for a quick car NOW.
I still wonder how much his reputation has suffered in the paddock from last year and if Renault and Honda are his only real options

Mmh, I don't think his reputation has suffered. Don't foget he's the 2x WC... :) (No, I'm reeeallly not a fan)

I share your point of view, I doubt if he's got the patience. But he lurned a good lesson when driving for Mclaren.
So, I'll say 60% Renault, 39% BMW, 1% Honda. ... :D
We'll see.

I think so too. And I think he will base his decision on the prospect of a fast car next season. Of course, with the regulations changing, probably no one can say for sure which teams will be at the top.

He returned to Renault for this season with hope to build a winning car, but I think it hasn't reached his expectations. I think he was dissappointed with his team's progress and may leave if he won't see any prospects for the future. The Renault engine lacks power, which Briatore complained about, and as far as I know they not far ahead in developing KERS (though it may not be a disadvantage actually, who knows). He said he hadn't seen anything from the new car yet, but maybe something will convince him to stay. I think the advantage here is that he's familiar with the Renault team and has an established position there. It's a tricky decision anyway and I don't envy him.

Ferrari still a possibiliy for Alonso ( :yikes: NO!) Kimi might take the money and run, probably 2010 but maybe 2009!!!! Silly Ferrari!!!

I think it all depends on what happens to Heidfeld in these last few races, though Alonso's hint that Toro Rosso is now the third fastest team on the grid may have been more than just a comment. I wouldn't mind seeing Alonso/Kubica at BMW as it would be a very strong pairing, but I really like Heidfeld.

I like him too and think h'es underated (driving style not good for quali) I also think Kubica would blow Alonso away!

Once again I must repeat an 'insider's' quote, "Fernando has no place at Ferrari now or in the future, too much baggage and self loathing"!

His driving style is fine for qualifying provided he doesn't have car issues. He put his car on row two in third place at the opening round last year and again at the Canadian grand prix. Fourth place on the grid at Nurburgring, followed by another third at Hungaroring and a fourth at Monza. For pretty much the rest of the season he qualified consistently right behind the top four drivers. If the F1.08 was more like the MP4-23 on its tyres, Heidfeld would probably be in third place in the WDC due to Raikkonen and Kovalainen's low point tallies, as well as his own consistency as shown over the past few years.

He's not qualied as well as Kubica though he's raced well.

I would like for Heidfeld to stay at BMW-Sauber, because I don't think he's so bad that media must call for his head. But on the other hand I would like to see an internal rivalry between Kubica and Alonso
It's like someone here said - the only solution is a third BMW-Sauber car :D

I personaly have no doubt that Kimi will leave sooner than his 'supposed' contract extension implie's, good riddance imho.
