Trained New York City police officers shot nine by standards.

By standards? I have not heard this phrase before, please explain...

Yeah...I think he means 'bystanders'.

I just think its so sad that children after children after children's are dying because lunatics have easy access to killing machines. Why do Americans want to protect their right to shoot over protecting their children?

Because there are American's like this doofus.

Because you don't bring a knife to a gun fight

How about looking at it as owning a gun to protect you and yours against some gun wielding nut.

 That's exactly how gun supporters see it. The issue is that a lot of people that are against guns don't differentiate between the gun owners who own them for protection and the gun wielding nut. They think they're all just $#@!ing whacko regardless, and they talk to/about gun supporters in the same degrading manner. That's why it's so hard to have a debate on the issue. People on the left think the people on the right are just as crazy as the guy who actually killed 26 human beings for kicks, the people on the right think the people on the left are just huge pu$$ies

I live in arizona, so I know LOOOOOTS of people who pack heat, and lots who don't. Trust me, it is a VERY divisive issue.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with owning a gun and using it legally. My Uncle has owned guns for years and has never had any problems or felt the need to shoot anything other than game for the pot. It's something I've always wanted to have a go at.

The problem is reactionary types who hear about some nut job shooting a heap of folk and immediate knee-jerk reaction is that guns are evil and they should be banned etc etc etc. Well that is just a load of :bs: . If a gun is used in a certain way then it is not a good thing but the vast majority who own guns legally only use them for legal recreational purposes - nothing wrong with that. As I have already pointed out, you will never legislate against a nutter. If someone gets it into their head that they are going to do something, well chances are they'll do it if they are determined enough. Nutters and criminals are not known to respect and follow laws.

So you go ahead and heavily legislate guns so what does you're local nutter do now? Either gets hold of a gun illegal or they use something else. So said nutter steals a car or uses their own one and drives it at 100mph into their local branch of Tesco or into a playground full of kid. What you going to do now? Ban Vauxhalls? To paraphrase the song, guns don't kill people, nutters who have lost touch or have never had any concept of reality do.

Guns do kill people. That's exactly what they're designed to do. Nutters kill people too. And when the two coincide the nutters kill lots more people than if they didn't have a gun.

Because of my job there have been times I have had to carry a "gun" have I ever had to use it? Sort of, It is amazing how compliant people become when they are disobeying someone who has just cocked a semi automatic rifle!

As a brit, in the UK I would not carry a weapon. As someone has already said don't bring a knife to a gun fight. If I lived in a country where it was hit or miss on if I needed to defend myself with a firearm then I would also carry one.

The problem is, and I honestly think in the USA it will get worse before it gets better because of computer games. US commanders have found that the "Playstation Generation" can kill without remorse because shooting and blowing stuff up is what they have been doing since they have been able to hold a controller. I would like to point out I am not blaming computer games for all of these shooting just that people have become desensitised to pain and suffering they may cause.

Do I play computer games? Yes
Do I let my kids play computer games? Yes

However as a parent I do everything I can to instil a moral compass into what is right and wrong.

My 2 cents is that i think some key points are being overreacted to, causing the somewhat OTT reactionary arguments on both sides.

I don't think anyone is calling for an outright ban, just measures to control who has access to them. Much like vehicles, as that jokey picture i posted alludes to. And unless i missed something, there is nothing like that in place at the moment over there. That surely is a completely fair thing to say, and for the US to try to implement?

One thing i see no reason for, is the ability to buy stupidly high powered weapons. I heard you can buy a Barrett 50cal in some states without a permit needed or anything, i mean what the absolute hell? No civilian needs a weapon that powerful.

I'm sure someone would say they need one of those to protect their family.

BTW, so ya'll know the 'mentality' gun stores are selling out on their AK 15 Bushmaster rifles here. It's been good short term for the gun industry since everyone is convinced that Obama will take away their guns.

The reality is that 40% of all guns sold here are sold either through the internet from private sales or from gun shows where you don't need anything but a driver's license to walk out of a show with a 30 round clip and an AK-15 for $800 bucks. No questions asked, no training, no registration, no gun lock, just enjoy your shooting Merry Christmas. Now you're ready to go hunting or to defend your family because a Glock 19 or a Sig Sauer 9mm with a ten bullet clip isn't enough to defend your family.

Are there lots of wild animals in America? Who are all these people defending their families from?
