I do think that Kimi gained an advantage by using the run off area but was it an unfair advantage, probably not. I'm no expert on the rules but he didn't cut a corner, in fact he took a longer route, and maintained his position rather than taking a place. He had the advantage of gaining speed before he went back on track but is that against the rules? Anyone of the drivers could have done what he did, some of those behind him did. Ultimately it was KERS that made it possible for him to overtake those ahead of him.

Seem's that it does not matter who is driving a Ferrari as they and their action's will alway's be frowned upon. How about let's reverse the situation as if it was Hami/Kovi who ran wide to avoid contact and ruining their race in the first corner, would this topic even exist?

Oh it would be paaaaaaaages longer :hehe:
But the point is the continuing lack of clarity and consistency by the stewards. If they were consistant there would be no debate about what would happen if a different driver or team pulld the same stunt.

:hehe: You right on target! The clarity of the rule's is non-existent which is very frustrating for us all.

I think issues like this are covered in the drivers briefing before the races and I seem to remember the drivers being told at the A1 ring they were free to use the run off at turn one, which they all did throughout the race and I think there are allowances made for the starts of most races. Still I think Kimi was taking the single fish a bit.

We wouldn't have all these problems if gravel traps and bigger kerbs were still around, drivers wouldn't dare go near them.

As the old saying goes "Give them an inch and they'll take a mile" which should be completed with "of run-off area".. ;)

If Kimi is allowed to do that, or anyone else for that matter, then who is to stop him.
Why is that there anyway, it used to be all track, should still be.

There used to be a barrier there. It was much better. Even if it was a big part of Belgium '98.

Let's get catch fencing back! If drivers start dying again by going off the trac, they won't do that. remember the glory days when we killed them for going off track? I think they forgot there was a reason for it.

He used the run off to gain an unfair advantage JUST as he did at Spa in 08. So i guess its ok for Kimi to do that, infact he would not have won the race if he did not gain so many positions unfairly there!

I think I'll take DC's word over yours:

"how much of an advantage it is to go wide there?" "none at all".

I guess you also must have missed all the other drivers that did the exact same thing and didn't get penalised either.

Edit:
Look at Rubens out braking himself and completely cutting turns 4-5 and gaining places by doing so. Why isn't anyone talking about this? Because he finished 7th, he's not Räikkonen and the car isn't a Ferrari.
