Alonso says Brawn GP pace is real

By Pablo Elizalde Thursday, March 12th 2009, 10:40 GMT

Renault driver Fernando Alonso believes the Brawn GP team is one of three or four squads who are a step in front of their rivals ahead of the start of the season following its showing in testing.

The team has been impressive in its first public outing at Barcelona this week, with Jenson Button setting the fastest time of the week yesterday with the BGP-001 machine.

Although some suspect the team is running with low fuel to grab the headlines and attract sponsors, Renault driver Alonso thinks Brawn GP's pace is real.

The two-time champion reckons the team is among a group of squads who are a step ahead of their rivals.

"It's hard to judge right now, but Toyota, Ferrari, BMW or Brawn are very fast," Alonso told Spanish media. "The competition is very tough and everybody is working well, with a good progression.

"It's obvious that there are three or four teams ahead of the rest," added Alonso, who believes his own Renault team is not as quick as its rivals.

"I had a lot more doubts last season because the car was not going well. Ferrari, Brawn, or BMW are, right now, unreachable," he was quoted as saying by AS newspaper.

"We have to think that finishing fifth here, with one car per team, means being 10th in a race. There are three or four teams ahead of us. Even so, it's not all about winning in Melbourne because the championship is very long."

Alonso thinks Brawn GP has benefited from having switched its efforts to 2009 earlier than the rest.

"It's not normal that they are so quick in their first tests," he added. "The truth is that they have a car that Honda began working on in 2007 to use in 2009. And that's evident in its design, because it's a very elaborate car, with different shapes than the rest."

Despite his caution about Renault's form, the Spanish driver admitted he feels more optimistic than last year.

"I'm more optimistic that at the same point last year. In 2008 I was not optimistic and, after the first two or three races, I thought I'd spend the rest of the championship as a tourist in the cities where we raced.

"I've always been optimistic, but maybe in the last few weeks there has been an excess of optimism. We are nearly here not there. We were really bad at Portimao and ready to win the title at Jerez. We have to take it one step at the time and if we work well we'll be able to compete in a high level."

Very pragmatic by Alonso. He realises what I have for sometime, that Renault are close to the front but just not close enough. I feel Alonso will have to try and make the difference and the team will have to get fully behind him. Renault aren't racing for the constuctors after all... why else did they resign Piquet?

But yes, Brawn is looking good, I still feel they'll be a midfield team though.

Well yeah, testing times are meaningless. But given the off-season drama, Brawn GP being even as high as that is nothing short of amazing.

I disagree, they still worked on the car while a buyer was found. Prior to this Honda had given up on 08 to focus on the 09 car. I expected a decent car. And I think we have one.

After getting in the 18's today.... I believe this car is "hot", "stolen", on the Juice or something. This car needs to be drug tested.. Going from dead last to first in 1 year, although I know there are special circumstances but come on.... :hehe:

I think all that they have lost is some testing. If you think about it even in the 3 months that the team was in termoil they did not develope the car at all. they did start 3 months before everyone so it equals out. plus this is the first car that Brawn has been involved with since the start. I am not saying that 1 man makes the whole team, but I am sure after 18months or so in the team he has pointed people in the right direction

I never said anything about development on the car. They lost their owner, and had to find a new one alongside a new engine which had to be retro-fitted into the car whilst all the while not knowing if they'd race again. Do not downplay the significance of being able to race at all, never mind being somewhat competitive. They could have not even appeared on the grid.

ok lets compare them to Force India? Who also changed engine.

FI knew in late 08 early 09 they were going to switch to Mclaren and they also got the gearbox and technical assistnace from Mclaren.

Brawn F1 only knew in Mid Jan they would be using the Mclaren engine and they had to make the car's chasis with the old honda gear box also and they didn't even have an engine to work from apparenlty just data provided by Merc.

It wouldnt of suprised me if the 1st chance they had to test was in Oz Fp1

I never downplayed anything. I was making my point that it shouldn't be such a surprise that they are so competitive - although I still raise questions about their true pace.
Redesigning the car to fit an engine is never an easy job, but it isn't impossible in the amount of time the team had. They were still being paid by Honda, so they still had the bank roll to continue to develop.
I think in comparison with many teams, in the past, who faced an uneasy future, Brawn had it easier. Their car was well ahead on development, they had top class facilities and Honda's pockets until the start of the year.

If Brawn GP have an excellent season this year, I bet Honda will regret pulling out of F1.

I was thinking the same thing.. I bet they are looking at team like a girlfriend they broke up with, that just got a boob job..
