Webber's a hard man to beat in qualifying as it is, let alone at his home race. Vettel, in the same car, will have a tough job indeed!

And Webber has always had potential, but certainly has never had a package to win a race. Saying he's never produced the goods is ridiculous, because he certainly HAS considering the cars he's driven. He consistently outperforms his teammates. Really -- I watched season reviews 2005-2008 back to back, and Webber's poor luck is almost laughable. You gotta feel sorry for the guy. Even if he's never able to challenge for a championship, I sincerely hope he has a race win to his name, or at least consistent strong-points finishes not marred by engine failures or the idiocy of other drivers before he retires.

Remember his fifth place in a Minardi in 2002? He scored 17 of Jaguar's 18 points in 2003, beat teammate Klien in 2004, teammate Heidfeld in 2005, teammate Rosberg in 2006, and made Coulthard look silly 2007-2008. So I wouldn't count him out yet.

Im on the fence here, i was never a Schumi fan boy, yet i do think Vettel has a great future infront of him.
On the other hand Mark will probably not beat Vettel initially due to his leg break, but im sure he's gonna give the young German a very hard time. Mark is a really nice guy - a trait not found in most drivers. Maybe that is his problem?

Or maybe he should change his lucky underwear :P He's had the same paid since Le Mans in the late 90s... oops.

Personally i think the best Driver in 2008 was Hamilton. Alonso had a very good 2nd part of the season but it is impossible to compare a driver that is driving for the championship with one that is driving to win a race.
I consider Alonso actually the best driver to win with a competitive car, but Hamilton is very close and he could improve a lot. I think that it is not correct to talk about Lewis vs Fernando just considering the 2007 season. Too many strange events in Mclaren.

I am italian and i am very close to Ferrari team but i think that with Alonso or Hamilton driving the F2008 championship would have been like Schumacher 2002 or 2004 season. Massa was the best in 2008, but i consider him just a good driver, not a champion. Hamilton in more faster and he can't do nothing for this, but he could try to be more regular. In 2008 he did too many stupid mistake. Raikkonen is a mistery. I am a great fan of Kimi but i can't accept to see him in 6th position when Massa win. I think he didn't find a good feeling with the F2008 but a great driver (like Alonso) try to change the car and work until it is good. Ferrari have an enormous potential and did all was possibile to give him a right car.

I think Webber need a team mate like Vettel to relaunch his career.

Red Bull could be a surprise in 2009 because Newey is a genius and with all the changing in the car he could do a great job. Renault engine seems to be more powerful now. I will not surprise to see Red Bull to win his first race in F1.

Honestly i don't think that Mark could beat Vettel but i think he could be very close to the german.

I just want to point out that not ALL Vettel fans were MS fanboys/fangirls. I certainly wasn't - I rate Vettel because of the potential he's shown and because I like his attitude off the track - F1 drivers need to take note of Vettel and start smiling when they win a race

As for SV being overrated - erm, I don't think so. He's already won a race in an underpowered car, and did consistently well in the second half of the season. I'm looking forward to seeing how Vettel vs Webber works out.

No of course not, but the media would like to play him as the next Schumacher, which isn't good especially at a young age.

After Schumacher's debut back in 1991, a lot of people saw him as the next Stefan Bellof. But back then German F1 drivers were quite rare (and not that good, but way better than Ralf ;) ) and Bellof's bright future had been taken away from him 6 years before in that tragic Sportscar accident at Spa.

That's true, but I think Vettel has the right attitude (from what I've seen in the media, anyway). He doesn't want the MS comparisons - I just picked up the latest Autosport - I haven't read it yet, but the title of Vettel's feature interview is 'Just don't mention the Schumi'. I get the impression that he'd rather be viewed as himself, rather than as the next MS just because he happens to be fast and German. I imagine it must be a little annoying (though a great compliment), to do well and then have these constant comparisons with someone else, rather than just concentrating on SV's own success.

Great post. The only thing that I would add is that Webber has occasionally shot himself on the foot with his big mouth.

Same here, particularly his slagging off of Williams calling them the "Toyota B team" when he went to Red Bull but he shot himself in the foot again as Williams finished miles ahead of Toyota and also beat Red Bull in 2007. At least he's calmed down a bit, moved on and talked more sense last year and the only big whinge I remember from him was Piquet's mega-flukey-totally-undeserved-you-jammy-git podium at Hockenheim and quite rightly.

Well I hope Seb Vettel goes onto something extremely good as he goes through F1.
Webber keeps me humoured with his outbursts.
