It wasn't a good car (it was utter poo in fact) but the Alfa that PatreseCheever drove sometime in the 80's always appealed to me. Hunched look was brutal.

The picture doesn't show up, but Patrese said the Alfas he drove in 84 and 85 were the worst cars he has ever driven in his F1 career.

my favourite was the Jaguar R1, just a shame it didnt live up the hype

Mike

It did look good. I quite like the general shape of cars from that period as well.

I have quite a few favorites but there are two that are the most dear to me.

1. Ferrari F1/87

2. Benetton B186 Yes three of these pics are of a model but the detail is amazing.

For me it was the McLaren-Honda MP4/7A of 1992.

When lined up on the grid it was never a match for a healthy Williams-Renault FW14B, but what it lacked in outright pace it made up for by being the last McLaren-Honda with that glorious V12 howl. :D

I will always remember the 1992 Monaco Grand Prix with Mansell all over the back of Senna, who by that stage was on tyres that had completed more than 70 laps of racing. The moral winner was Mansell but for a Senna-McLaren fan it was ever so sweet with Ayrton winning.

Welcome to the forum. Unlike the MP4/8, which was let down really only by its engine, I'd say Williams had the edge in the chassis department over the MP4/7 as well. Still, it truly was a great looking car. I agree with you about those Honda engines. They had a very distinct sound, made all the more noticeable by Senna's unusual method of throttle application! :cloud9:

Thanks for that McLaren Fan. :P

Agreed, the MP4/8 would have been a fantastic car but for that Ford HB V8, it wasn't until later in the season where McLaren even received equalled equipment with Benetton with the Zetec V8! As a result they were always at a massive HP disadvantage.

The MP4/7A just coudn't compete with the Williams, using standard suspension compared to the active suspension of the Williams it just was nowhere near as fast, having said that Senna still worked his magic and it worked in varying terms of success.

I think I read somewhere that Senna used to "pluck" the throttle, that dab-dab-dab application on exiting a corner. Back in the days I think the McLaren engineers used to prefer Prost's smooth application as it was better for fuel consumption. For what Senna used in extra fuel with that technique, he made up for with speed!! :)

That technique of Senna's was even more pronounced on the V12, traction control on the MP4/8 probably took away that art.

Whilst the MP4/8 was Senna's last McLaren, for me it wasn't as special. With McLaren no longer having a works engine they seemed to be on the backfoot, whereas at least in 1992 Honda would still be making evolutions of the V12 to try and get on an equal footing with the Renault V10.
