Watching this random sciency type program with Dara O'Briain at the moment. Apparently 99.9% of all the species that ever lived on Earth are now extinct, how crazy is that? And a more philosophical point, why do we atheists all run our years off the premise that Jesus existed? 2012 AD, eg. The world is billions of years old! I'm sure there must be a more logical reason for our year system than some Christian crap.

Because writing 4,395,791,227 would take too long?

:hehe: Well, i would have assumed that it was just out of habit since the dark ages when almost all believed in that sort of stuff (and therefore perhaps sheer convenience is the reason). It just strikes me as a very odd phenomenon, thinking about it.

In that case, the answer is simply, it's because Christians were the ones that spread their religion widest throughout the world therefore we've just defactoed into using that calendaring. Had it been the Chinese or the Jews we'd be using their year system. interestingly enough, the Gregorian system we internationally use today was around way before Christ so a trip to wikipedia might be in order.

At least they didn't monkey around with the months with the exception of Julius and Augustus Caesar.

Hmm. I think i'm going to have to create a decimalised or perhaps SI date and year system. It all seems a bit of a mess really eh? That would tidy things up nicely.

Huh? Gregorian calendar was introduced by pope Gregorius in the 1500's! The Julian calendar was there first (introduced by good ol' Julius Caesar).

Well, i've never seen Star Trek, but i guess it makes sense that they'd have had to decimalise the dating and year system if they had a character that was based on pure logic in the show.

Yeah but they also had a character that never met an alien vagina he didn't like.
