Been reading an article about driving styles and how different drivers react to G-force, rotatotion and yaw. Apparantly its a grossly under studied area..Picking up tiny changes in the car ..or being able to drive round them produces big advantages in different areas. Dealing with oversteer has benefits in slow to medium corners (all styles do well in the fast corners). the great drivers over the years(Senna, Schumacher, Mansel) could work with oversteer, its what makes Hamilton amazing round Monacco and Vettel at quali. That said, when it comes to setting up the McLaren the team listen to Button(who cant deal with it) in the knowledge that Hamilton will probably adapt to any car and Button has only a small window he can operate well in. :yikes: Great plan Mclaren!

Read something about Alonso a while ago tho not sure where, he'll sometimes deal with oversteer by turning in too much for the front to handle so it loses more grip than the rear inducing understeer.

True indeed, some examples of that technique (and other excellent driving) here!

To get back to hamilton. Why are McLaren favouring a set up that could produce a 3rd and 4th instead of one likely to give a 1st?

I like watching Alonso in the wet, he is one of a few who uses karting wet racing lines.

Setup? Each driver can setup the car how ever they choose. I don't understand what you're saying. Car design wise they haven't designed it to favour Button if that's what you're implying. Its common knewledge even mentioned at the launch by the team and drivers even though their driving styles arent exactly the same they have a similar tastes in how they like a car to handle so development hasn't favoured anyone.

Hopefully we don't get another season of this...

Well hopefully not, but when you read........ ."Whenever their is a divergence of opinion on Friday, the team invariably follow Button's preference, probably secure in the knowledge that hamilton will be able to drive well regardless of the car's traits, whereas Button loses more of his performance if the car is not exactly as he needs it."........it doesnt fill me with a lot of confidence

Where'd you read this? Sounds like something made up to me. Besides drivers can setup their car at each race how they like. No way would any team make a driver use their team mates setup. Remember Alonso didn't let Hamilton see his car setup at all for a while in 07.

They're talking about the big Friday set-up not the tweaks that the drivers do later in the weekend . Five page article in autosport called "Inside the cockpit" Its not just about McLaren, I picked that bit out, its about style of driving-, how its with a driver from racing as a child and the pros and cons of the style. Lots of interesting info in it.

Still doesn't make sense, No team would make one driver use a setup he doesn't want. And Fridays are when drivers setup their cars with their engineers, most teams will share data from Fridays but what you're implying is Fridays are used for Jenson to setup the car to his liking and Lewis has to tweak that Saturdays in P3.

It's just nonsense, Lewis would do his own setup work Fridays as well.

Come on Bud you should of guessed by now anything said by racechick is going to be very heavily biased towards Lewis and anti Jenson,MW or McLaren in general :hehe:

Well I didnt make that quote up, make of it what you will. Its the Friday set up they're talking about(it was me that added ,maybe lewis can tweak it later in the weekend...I mean surely he gets SOME say???maybe not). If anyone has autosport. Pg 34. Third column of writing, starts 15 lines down

"Whenever their is a divergence of opinion on Friday, the team invariably follow Button's preference, probably secure in the knowledge that hamilton will be able to drive well regardless of the car's traits, whereas Button loses more of his performance if the car is not exactly as he needs it." Not my words.

I wonder if Alonso or Vettel have to have a set up that suits their team mate but may compromise them.........thought not.

It makes no sense, McLaren have the resources for two independent setups. There's no need to set Lewis's car up in the way that Jenson likes but Lewis doesn't. Maybe this is about feedback on developmental parts for the car? Or maybe Lewis is complicit in this? When Jenson disagrees he changes his mind and agrees that he prefers Jenson's setup - although that also sounds far-fetched.

Dont know why, apart from the reasons given, can only guess. It definately said Friday set up, not developmental work.
I will stress again though that the article was not about Mclaren(that bit just jumped out at me) It was about driving styles/ preferences/techniques.

What?

I would guess it's just the way the article has been written.there is no way lewis will use a whole day setting a car up,only for McLaren to change it and say no,you will use blar blar blar set up.
Very rarely do the McLarens have the same set up come raceday.it just wouldn't be beneficial for the team to have a driver driving a set up he doesn't like.
