That is a very good idea indeed, helped by the fact that my dad's mate (used) to own Knochkill karting.. Not sure if he still does..

I'll look into that, I suppose that comes under "media events" etc.

Sam,
One other thing I have noticed is what you say a potential sponsor will recieve with their sponsorship and that is not financially feasible for you without a set dollar amount. The sponsor need's to know EXACTLY what sort of sponsorship they will be recieveing from you. So in lamen's term's you need to set a fixed dollar amount for EACH of these service's and then a fixed $ amount for the whole package of the service's you are advertising:

In return for sponsorship, I would be able to give you and your company:
• Kart bodywork graphics - How much?
• Race suit embroidery - How much?
• Van graphics - How much?
• Website advertising space - How much?
• Local / national newspaper articles - How much?
• I would be available for press conferences, media events and photo opportunities - How much and will your sponsorship entail travel/accomodation's cost or assistance?.

There are alot of variable's that need to be ironed out but offering a complete analysis of your need's must also be met with what you can offer the company to justify their financial support. Your team will spend more the first season on advert's and sticker's for the car and trailer than anything else. Remember when your driving to the next race an employee of one of your sponsor's maybe next to you or at the same filling station. Then on Monday they will mention, and believe me someone will, either to the boss or another employee what they saw and EVERYTHING get's back to the boss in one way or another.

The real work has not even started, believe me!

Just had a little brainwave which may or may not be useful but something to think about...

As you're probably aware lots of companies have team-building away days, and some of these involve kart races. My father went on one once with his company where each company entered a team of four or five drivers. Perhaps you could look into the possibility of renting a circuit and organising one of these events as a fundraiser for you, with you on hand during the day to give tips on how to drive a kart, how to drive the circuit, etc. Having the Scottish Kart Champion on hand would be a good selling point, and it would put you in face-to-face contact with many potential sponsors, who would get to see you strut your stuff first hand.

Obviously these events are more usually arranged for the benefit of the track itself or possibly a company that rents the track for these events, so you're first decision would be whether you would want to make a profit on the event itself, or simply break even, or possibly even use it as a loss-leader, i.e. make a loss on the day in the hope that added sponsorship revenue later on makes it worthwhile in the long run.

Excellent idea!! There are ALOT of companie's now that have get together's for their employee's at karting track's. Now since Moffat Racing does not have the kart's to offer for such an event your expertise could be worth a potential income for the team. I mean heck your a young handsome gent and I'm sure your very gregarious, such as I  , so you would be selling the sport for what it is. Yet the BIGGEST aspect would be the contact's you could make???

Tex, Actually nowadays a LOT of companies actually pay for bodywork etc!

When you say "how much", do you mean how much money for each or how much advertising on kart etc?

As for the "Arrive n Drive" karts, I think it is a really fantastic idea, would be a good selling point to a bigger company :)

How much money for each Sam because all sponsor's will only want a certain thing. A local sponsor who is well known in your city or area may not want to advertise globaly only local so the price breakdown let's that company decide what they think is best for them not you. Let the potential sponsor decide what they need and dont forget your just starting out so they decide what they want and need not you. If they become a major sponsor, ie one who give's the slightest sponsorship for a few year's running, your progress and result's will determine if you should ask for a larger contribution later.

Remember at this point ANYTHING is a step forward  .

Yeah..

Well I don't know how much for each, because I don't know how much I expect/need to make..

I was going to give all (major) sponsor's everything as part of the deal, with minor sponsors only getting small space on kart and suit..

What do you think?

Sam,
You need to set a fixed price for each option that is all, stop worrying about how much you will need for the next race or event as your just getting started and ANYTHING will help, right? It's not going to be easy but it WILL be easier with a sponsor's cash input. Every sponsor should be kept aware, with copie's of invoice's, as to where their money is being spent.

I keep telling you that any help, which mean's you have a sponsor, will help. Take it one step at a time and stop thinking too far ahead, you must crawl before you can walk right? One race and one serie's at a time mate that's what you should focus on.

Yea, OK Mate :) I don't know how to value everything :S :L

That is very easy as all you need to do is get your 'out of pocket' cost for those thing's. These are all quote's that you need to get from your supplier's before you/we can proceed with sponsorship letter's.

Once you have a set price on these item's, in all different size's offered, they can be added to the letter breaking down the cost which give's the sponsor the choice. Remember honest business is good business so make sure, as they might inquire, that you have the said cost down to the penny, honestly is your greatest asset.

I would also include the going rate for wheel's, tire's and gas just so they will know the other cost of what it take's to race consistently.

Hey Guys, I'm down at Wombwell at the minute, still another 2 hours until racing begins!

Just thought I'd give you a little update :)

Yesterday went very well, never been to circuit before, but at the end of play I'm only 1 tenth from the fastest man on track.. I was in the wars a bit yesterday, I took out a top guy in Britain, and for my troubles... He got me back and took me right off the track :( By times we are about 5th fastest, in a field of 31 drivers, so I'm very pleased at the moment.

There is so many drivers that instead of the usual 3 heats, there will be 4 but each driver only races in 3.. As there is a maximum grid of 24 on the grid.

Because of this, there will be a "B Final" which were the slowest 10 drivers race, and the top 3 or something go to the "A Final" but start at the back of the grid. My aim when arriving yesterday morning was an "A Final" finish, but now we are looking at the podium! I just hope the new tyres are a good set and we can be even more competitive than yesterday :D

Good Luck again Sam, you can do it. :)

hey guys :)

Well, Yesterday was sure a day to remember for me! I learned a hell of a lot from being in massive grids, and sometimes you can be punished for being "over agressive".

heat 1: Started 15th, made my way up to 8th. 2nd last corner I went for a lunge (Fair move IMO) and there was contact, I went airbourne and finished 11th.

heat 2: Started 15th (again), made my way to 8th (again!) and yep, you guessed it... I went for another lunge into 2nd last corner and ended up losing a position as a result..

heat 3:Started 4th. Took lead on lap 1, and was demoted to 2nd on lap 2 by the dude I took out on Saturday (found out he was 4th in Britain last year) and we pulled away from the rest, he took the win by 0.62 seconds, and we were both 3 seconds ahead of the others! Only 0.03 off the winners fastest lap, so I knew anything was possible in the final.

Final: Started 8th. Made my way to 7th on turn 1. We got the jetting wrong for the final, meaning I had very little pull from the corners.. which left me very vunerable to attack. I tried to get by into turn 1, but was squeezed so much I had 2 wheels on the grass, and had to brake up. I was still in 8th at this point, until my mate took me off the circuit, and we both went onto the grass, and I regained 10th, where I finished. Later, to be moved to 8th as one of the top 3, was DQ'd.

Felt pretty sorry for my mate, Joe. he is in the same boat as me, talented but without the money.. he needed to finish 3 places ahead of his rival to win the title, but didnt manage to and only claimed 2nd in championship, I was pleased though that he came over to apologize for his lunge, and I could clearly see he was gutted, and he meant it.

Well for me this weekend was a MASSIVE learning curve for me, I learned to take every opportunity, and to be a lot more aggressive! I scored 121 points in the NKF this weekend, out of a possible 130.. making me the 3rd highest points scorer at one round this season (In My class), and remember, I'd never been to this track before saturday!

On an even better note, I think my performance over the weekend has prompted my dad and grandad to take the plunge, and we are seriously thinking about doing the British Championships in 09, and if we can have that performance over a whole season, we could even make top 15!

So yes, We are very happy, even after a slightly dissapointing final, my dad just came up to me and said, "That's what we came for", after I complained about being taken out twice :P

Thanks for the support :)

That's excellent news mate, especially on a track that you've not been on before. And you didn't look much out of place against the 4th best karter in the UK this year. You can beat him easy next time you're up against him. ;)

Well done again.

Sam,
I have a potential prospect that I want to contact regarding sponsorship. He is UK based, young and VERY rich, has a Ferrari FXX and own's the DRR9 that run's in the European LM's serie's. Here are a few pic's and he is the one in the blue drivers suit:

I agree. That's a pretty good performance considering everything. Congratulations.
